Heat and Temperature Activity 1 Explaining Hotness and Coldness

The document provides information about heat and temperature. It includes questions to motivate students about solids, liquids, gases and how they are affected by heat. The objectives are to define heat and temperature, demonstrate water temperature measurement, and appreciate heat's importance. A group activity measures water temperatures in containers initially, after adding hot water to one and leaving the others unchanged, to demonstrate heat transfer and temperature change. Questions analyze heat transfer and temperature relationships. Heat is defined as energy transfer between objects due to temperature difference, while temperature measures heat intensity.

RELATED QUESTIONS FOR THE NEW TOPIC:

• What happens to solids, liquids, or gases when

they absorb or release heat?
• Does heat affect all kinds of materials in the same
way?
• Are heat and temperature one and the same?
MOTIVATION

COLD
Correct Answer
HOT
Correct Answer
HEAT AND
TEMPERATURE
HOTNESS AND COLDNESS
OBJECTIVES:

• define Heat and Temperature;

• demonstrate the measurements of water’s
temperature;
• appreciate the importance of heat in daily
living.
GROUP ACTIVITY
ACTIVITY 1 – EXPLAINING HOTNESS AND COLDNESS
Measured
temperature( ̊C )
Change in
Container temperature
Initial Final

Container 1

Container 2

Container 3
PROCEDURE:

1. Half-fill the three containers with equal amount of cold water.

Arrange them next to one another.
2. Place your finger for a while into any of the containers.
3. Measure with a thermometer the temperature of the water in each
container. Record your measurements in Table. (Note: The initial
temperature of the water in each container should be the same as
they come from the same source.)
PROCEDURE:

4. Add the same amount of hot water to container 1, tap water to

container 2 and the same cold water to container 3. Leave the
containers for a while.
5. Dip your fingers again, this time into the three containers. Make
sure that you do not dip the same finger into the containers.
6. Measure and record the temperature of the water in all containers.
Calculate the change in the temperature of water in each container.
QUESTIONS:

Q1. What actually transferred when you dipped your finger into the water?
In what direction did it transfer?
Q2. Was the water ‘hot’ or ‘cold’? Explain.
Q3. How close is your estimated value to the measured temperature of the
water?
Q4. Which container feels ‘hottest’? Which container feels ‘coolest’?
QUESTIONS:

Q5. What do you think causes the difference in the hotness or coldness of the water
inside the containers?
Q6. In which container(s) is heat transfer taking place? What evidence best supports
your answer? Within this container, which absorbs heat? Which gives off heat?
Q7. In which container was there the greatest amount of heat transferred? What is
the basis of your answer?
Q8. How are the amount of heat transferred and the change in temperature of water
related?
FURTHER DISCUSSION:

• Heat - transfer of energy between objects or places because of

difference in temperature.
- exists as ‘energy in transit’ and it is not contained in an
object.
• Thermal energy - an energy that is contained in an object due
to the motion of its particles. The thermal energy of an
object is changed if heat is transferred to or from it
FURTHER DISCUSSION:

• Temperature – degree or intensity of heat present in a

substance or object.
- also refers to hotness and coldness.
• Thermometer – a tool that is used to measure the
temperature.
PRACTICAL APPLICATION

• Heat is very important in daily living in warming the

house, cooking, heating the water and drying the
washed clothes.
• Living organisms need heat to survive.
GENERALIZATIONS
