INTRODUCTION:
Medical image processing is the most challenging and emerging field now a days.
Processing of MRI images is one of the part of this field.
This project describes the proposed strategy to detect & extraction of brain tumour from patient’s
MRI scan images of the brain.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is an advanced medical imaging technique used to produce
high quality images of the parts contained in the human body. MRI imaging is often used when
treating brain tumours, ankle, and foot.
From these high-resolution images, we can derive detailed anatomical information to examine
human brain development and discover abnormalities.
This method incorporates with some noise removal functions, segmentation and morphological
operations which are the basic concepts of image processing.
Pre-processing of MRI images is the primary step in image analysis which perform image
enhancement and noise reduction techniques which are used to enhance the image quality, then
some morphological operations are applied to detect the tumour in the image.
Detection and extraction of tumour from MRI scan images of the brain is done by using MATLAB
software.
LITERATURE SURVEY:
Astina minz, Prof. Chandrakant Mahobiya in 2017[3] proposed an effective
automatic classification method for brain MRI on the dataset of 50 MRI images is
projected using the Adaboost machine learning algorithm. The proposed system
consists of three parts such as Preprocessing, Feature extraction and Classification.
Preprocessing has removed noise in the raw data, it transform RGB image into
grayscale, median filter and thresholding segmentation is applied. It gives 89.90%
accuracy and result in normal brain or in Malignant or Benign type of tumor.
Many researches and studies were done in the area of medical image processing in
the brain tumour detection by using different techniques.
However, not all of them were effective in detection of the tumour; there were
variation in terms of efficiency, reliability, computational complexity & execution time.
OBJECTIVE:
The main aim of our project is to design a framework for automatic detection of the
tumor to obtain more accuracy from the imaging data set which plays a vital role in
the diagnosis of tumors by using various image processing algorithm in MATLAB.
The main objective of medical imaging of Brain Tumour is to extract meaningful and
accurate information from these images with least error possible.
The ultimate goal of segmentation is to extract important features from the image
data. The segmentation of tumour from MRI images of brain is time consuming
process.
To detect tumour in Brain by image processing and develop a code using MATLAB.
MATLAB is fast algorithm used for detection of tumour from MRI images in a very
short time.
PROPOSED METHOD:
MATLAB
MATLAB is a high-performance language for technical computing. It integrates
computation, visualization, and programming in an easy-to-use environment where
problems and solutions are expressed in familiar mathematical notation. Typical uses
include:
• Math and computation
• Algorithm development
• Modeling, simulation, and prototyping
• Data analysis, exploration, and visualization
• Scientific and engineering graphics
• Application development, including Graphical User Interface building.
MATLAB is an interactive system whose basic data element is an array that does not
require dimensioning. This allows you to solve many technical computing problems,
especially those with matrix and vector formulations, in a fraction of the time it would
take to write a program in a scalar non interactive language such as C or Fortran.
METHODOLOGY:
The algorithm has two stages, first is pre-processing of given MRI image and after
that segmentation and then perform morphological operations.
These are the steps performed on MRI image of brain tumour using MATLAB
algorithms:
Brain tumour MRI image is applied to pre-processing and after that tumour is extracted
by morphological and watershed segmentation processes. The medical image
segmentation has difficulties in segmenting complex structure with uneven shape, size,
and properties .
We use Grayscale image because it is preferred format for image processing because
grayscale images are much less complex.
Watershed image is superimposed over the image after high pass filter has been
applied. It is applied on grayscale image using MATLAB watershed algorithms . By this
segmentation we detect the TUMOUR alone.
EXPECTED RESULT:
APPLICATIONS:
In near future, a database can be created for different patients having different types of brain tumours
and locate them.
In future this programme can be done more advanced so that tumour can be classified according to
its type.
Tumour growth can be analysed by plotting graph which can be obtained by studying sequential
images of tumour affect.
Possible extension of the presented work could use more features. It would be beneficial to connect
the system to cloud storage of patient’s information in hospital.
This application can be extended to accessibility and usability through mobile phones.
This application is developed to analyse all types of MRI scans of same patient and result of all scans
are integrated, it can suggest appropriate treatment and medication as well.
CONCLUSION:
MATLAB is fast algorithm used for detection of tumour from MRI images in a very short time. At the
end tumour is mapped onto original greyscale image with 255 intensity to
make tumour visible in the image. For accurate diagnosis of tumour patients, appropriate segmentation
method is required to be used for MRI images to carry out an improved diagnosis and treatment. The brain
tumour detection is a great help for the physicians and a boon for the medical imaging and industries
working on the production of MRI imaging. As result, it can be easier on modern medicine extraction
tumours.
