Cost Effective Iot Based Garbage Monitoring System For Urban Waste Management

This document describes an IoT-based garbage monitoring system presented by students Pranali Tawte, Sharang Ambadkar, and Meet Desai. The system uses ultrasonic sensors and a Node MCU microcontroller to monitor garbage levels in bins and send alerts when bins are full. It aims to improve waste management, reduce pollution, and optimize garbage collection routes to lower costs. The system was tested and results showed it could help keep cities clean and reduce vehicle fuel use and expenses.

2 ACE- IT department Garbage Monitoring System
Introduction
❖ FeelGood is a Startup working in Solid Waste Management, who are willing to
come in collection of waste for whom we have developed this system.
In our daily life, we see the pictures of garbage bins being overfull and all the
garbage spills out resulting in pollution. This also increases the number of
diseases as large numbers of insects and mosquitoes breed on it.

❖ To avoid all such situations we are going to implement a project called Garbage
Monitoring System using Internet of Things. It will help in collecting the
garbage from a particular area – the area whose public Garbage Bins are
overflowing with prior concern.

❖ Also will help in reducing carbon footprints generated due to garbage vehicles.

Problem definition & Proposed solution
Our problem statement is to design a System Based on Node MCU
MicroController for collecting the garbage from a particular area – the area
whose public Garbage Bins are overflowing with prior concern.

❑The System is targeted towards:

❑ Government Bodies in charge of Garbage collection.

❑ Various other NGOs responsible for cleanliness programs.

❑ Smart City development programmes.

Scope of project
The website developed, will have user-friendly GUI, and can be accessed from
anywhere.

Further , an android app can be implemented for easier access, and monitoring of
garbage bins.

Data mining techniques can be implemented to predict the possible duration of

filling of garbage cans of particular area.

On a global scale it will help to reduce global warming.

System description
Architecture Overview
The architecture of the Garbage Monitoring System (GMS). The sensors which
are installed near apartment buildings and individual houses, exchange
information with each other and send the information to the server through
wireless communication. Structurally, the proposed system is divided into two
domains: an administration domain and a service domain. In the administration
domain, information transferred from a Smart Garbage Bin(SGB) is analyzed
and processed. In the service domain, residents throw away their food waste in a
Smart Garbage Bin, and resident and SGB information is collected and
transferred to the administration domain.

Results and Discussions
● Garbage monitoring system will stop overflowing of dustbins along roadsides
and localities as smart bins are managed at real time.
● It will also aims at creating a clean as well as green environment.

● Further in scope by using the route algorithm it will smartly find the shortest
route thus it will reduce the number of vehicles used for garbage collection.
● It will send optimized routes directly to drivers.

● It will reduce fuel Consumption.

● Less amount of fuel will be consumed by vehicles thus can save a large
amount of money as well.

Conclusions
The web page gives a view of the garbage bins and highlights the garbage
collected in color in order to show the level of garbage collected.

The system puts on the buzzer when the level of garbage collected crosses the
set limit.

Thus this system helps to keep the city clean by informing about the garbage
levels of the bins by providing graphical image of the bins with the help of pie
chart on the website.

The website has an eco-friendly interface and can be used by all types of users.

Future Scope
The objective of this project is to make an automated system for garbage collection,
which avoids spilling of garbage. The main aim is to design a system, which makes
the garbage collector aware of garbage level, and reduces his efforts of manually
going and checking. Thus, it also increases efficiency of the whole garbage
collection process, reduces fuel wastage. Also when the garbage reaches its

threshold value the notification is shown and the same is displayed on the website.
Further, an android app can be implemented for easier access, and monitoring of
garbage bins.

Data mining techniques can be implemented to predict the possible duration of

filling of garbage cans of particular area.
