Class 7 Science: Water-A Precious Resource

Water is a precious resource that is facing problems of availability and distribution globally. While 71% of the Earth's surface is covered in water, most of it is unavailable for human consumption. India faces issues with uneven distribution of water across its regions and depletion of groundwater resources from increasing population, industries, and agricultural usage. Proper water management through techniques like rainwater harvesting, use of stepwells, and drip irrigation can help mitigate these problems. Individuals should also adopt water-wise habits like turning off taps and mopping floors to conserve this critical resource.

CLASS 7 SCIENCE

WATER- A PRECIOUS RESOURCE

WATER – A PRECIOUS RESOURCE

What are the problems faced in these

cases?
AVAILABILITY OF WATER
 World Water Day – 22nd March
 According to the UN each person requires 50 Litres/day
 International Year of Freshwater – Year 2003
 71% of the earth’s surface has water

Various sources of water – Seas, Lakes, Ice

Caps, Rivers, Groundwater and the
atmosphere
 Most of this water is not fit for
consumption except for freshwater
FORMS OF WATER

GAS

SOLID

LIQUID
Many places in India do not have good
water system. Thus women and children
often have to face a lot of problems to
fetch water.
GROUNDWATER
 WATER TABLE–The upper limit of the layer of the water which
is filled in the space between particles of soil and gaps
between rocks. It varies in place to place.
 INFILTRATION-The seeping of rainwater and water from
various sources into the ground. This recharges the
groundwater.

 AQUIFER-The places where groundwater is stored between

layers of hard rock below the water table. This water is usually
pumped up through handpumps.
WATER TABLE-DEPLETION
When the groundwater is getting used up and not
replenished by natural processes the water is depleted
which happens due to-

INCREASING POPULATION- It requires construction of

buildings which reduces the area for the seeping of water
and increases the demand for water.

INCREASING INDUSTRIES- Water is used in all industries

and Water used by most of it is drawn from the ground.

AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES- Due to lack of rains and

irrigation systems the farmers depend on groundwater and
the population pressure increases the use of water.
DISTRIBUTION OF WATER
Some places have good amount of rain and are water-rich whereas
there are deserts which have scanty rainfall. Some regions have
excessive rains and experience floods while some others have very
little rainfall which may result in droughts. Thus, India which is a vast
country has uneven distribution of water due to many factors.
WATER MANAGEMENT

Mismanagement or wastage must be avoided by civic

authorities and individuals as well by rainwater harvesting, use
of Bawris and drip irrigation which is a technique of watering
plants by making use of narrow tubings which deliver water
directly at the base of the plant.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Water-wise habits-
Turn off taps while brushing
Mop the floor instead of washing
Give some more examples of what can you do to save water.
EFFECT OF WATER SCARCITY ON PLANTS

Plants dry up and wilt due to scarcity of water. The green

character of the planet shall be lost. This may mean the end
of all life, for a world without plants shall mean no food, no
oxygen, not enough rain, and innumerable other problems.
