Nature of Man
Man is made to attain happiness through the pursuit of
moral good or the practice of virtues.
Etymologically “virtue” means manliness, ie strength,
courage. In general virtue is a kind of disposition, ability,
or habit inclining man to think and to act correctly, to
follow what is right and to avoid what is evil.
Virtue involves a habit, a constant effort to do things
well in spite of obstacles and difficulties.
According to St Agustine, virtue is a good quality of the
mind by which one lives rightly, which no one badly and
which God works in us but without us.
VIRTUES OF A HEALTH CARE PROVIDER:
a. Questions- in order to act righteously, what are the true unities necessary for a health
worker to process.
b. Fidelity-faithfulness in the relationship of trust, every patient must that is health care giver
will keep his promise and keep his best interest first in his mind
c. Honesty- truthfulness, it is testing the patient, the family, the colleagues and society, the
truth about an illness, its prognosis effectiveness of care are research findings.
2 Approaches to truth teaching:
Person –centered :
1. Considers the patient’s problems illness or conditions
2. Physician may not tell the truth when it is for the best interest of the patient
d. Integrity-wholeness. Acting in the same way on and believes he should act.
e. Humility- recognizing one’s capabilities and limitations.
-doing one’s best and asking for help as needed.
- accepting deserved praise graciously and denying undeserved praise .
f. Respect- paying attention to others
- listening attentively to a clients complaints or a colleagues question
g. Compassion- a loving kindness
- a feeling for those who suffer
- a self-sacrifice voluntarily given for the benefit of another or given with a or no
hope of return, gain
recognition of payment but given because the other’s need is greater.
h. Prudence- foresight
- habitual deliberate creation and circumspection in action
- taking into consideration all possible circumstances and consequences before acting.
- to consider how the different options may affect others making a decision
i. Courage-doing what one sees as right without undue fear or standing up against one sees as
wrong even if it
means standing up alone.
l. Justice- it signifies fairness which also to give to each one what he deserves.
m. Fortitude- endurance or courage in the face of pain or adversity. It is moral strength.
n. Temperance- it is virtue that moderates desire and passion.
o. Vices- the authority and power of the health care provider over the vulnerable patient, the
respect he gets from
the society, the development of vices.
VICES WHICH OPPOSE PRUDENCE:
1. Fraud- the use of deception for the unlawful pain. Someone who is not what he or she pretends to be.
2. Carelessness- light-hatred. Care free, casual. Indifferent, thoughtless, negligent
3. Stubbornness- hard to work with. Difficult to deal with
VICES WHICH OPPOSE JUSTICE:
4. Superstitious
5. Disrespect. Ie. Non payment of legitimate debts.
VICES WHICH OPPOSE FORTITUDE:
6. Recklessness- careless, indifferent danger, “throwing caution to the wind”
7. Cowardice- lack or failure of courage
VICES WHICH OPPOSE TEMPERANCE:
8. Pride – in ordinate self-esteem, conceit, behavior of superiority over others.
9. Greed- inordinate exquisiteness
10.Lust- the strong physical desire to have sex with somebody. Usually without associated feelings of love
or affection
11.Hatred- a feeling of intense hostility towards somebody or something. Compound anger.
12.Vanity- the quality of having vain. Something or no real worth. Exercise pride
