The First Cell Phone

• The first cell phone


was named the
DynaTAC8000X.
• It was created by
Martin Cooper in 1984.
• It took over a decade
to develop and $100
million.
• There were only about
2,000 of these cell
phones available to
the public.
Features
• Weight- 2 pounds Could
store only 30 phone
numbers.
• Battery needed to be
charged for 10 hours.
Talk time- 1 hour!
• The phone cost $3,995!!
• Even though the cell
phone had been
invented, it was still too
heavy, too impractical,
and too expensive for
most people to buy!
The Next Step
• Extensive research & development work
was started to meet the objective of
designing a cheaper, lighter and attractive
cell phone.
• Cell phone companies began to introduce
new phones to make them more appealing.
• They created address books, built-in fax
machines, calculators, e-mail, and SMS
messaging within the phones.
• Flip-phones started to become popular.
Flip Phones
• One of the first, major
flip phones was the Nokia
9000 Communicator.
• It was created in the
late 1980’s.
• Weighed 397 grams.
• It was popular but still
cost $3,000.
• Includes the most useful
organizer functions:a
calendar,an address book
and a calculator.
The First Blackberry
• The first Blackberry was called
the Blackberry 850.
• Introduced in 1999.
• It was originally named the
Interactive Pager.
• It was one of the first phones
with a full keyboard.
• Supporting email and limited
HTML browsing, the small
device featured a monochrome
screen.
The other Blackberries
• Among the other blackberries
include-

00,8320.
• The latest BlackBerry 8320
features Wifi.
• However, phones that could
function as more than just a
telephone began to increase in
popularity at the start of the
century.
• Even after the Blackberry was
invented, cell phones without
full QWERTY keyboards were
still popular among all people.
Camera Phones
• These phones had an
inbuilt camera.
• Camera phones made it
easy to snap pictures
anywhere and send them
to friends.
• They were first
developed in 2002.
• The Sanyo SCP-5300 was
the first camera phone
available to Americans.
• Photos were of VGA
quality.
• Photos taken were often
very blurry and distorted.
Other Camera Phones
• VGA camera phones were followed
by digital camera phones.
• In October 2004, Samsung became
the first to market a 5-
megapixel camera phone.
• Since then,LG and Nokia have
followed suit,with Nokia launching
its highly touted N95 phone with a
5-megapixel camera.
• In March 2006 Sony Ericsson took
digital imaging in camera phones to
new heights with the launch of the
K800 and K790 phones, the first
handsets to carry the Cyber-shot
name.
Phones with Gaming facility
• Cell phones soon
became all about
games, as well.
• Nokia attempted to
bring major gaming to
cell phones by
introducing the Nokia
N-Gage.
N-Gage
• Was awkward to hold.
• ‘Gamers’ typically stuck
with their original
devices.
The Era of i-phones
• Launched by Apple in
June 2007.
• The iPhone is a line of
Internet and multimedia-
enabled smartphones.
• First phone without any
numerical keypad.
• Touch-screen.
• Music, e-mail, photos, a
camera, and thousands of
applications.
Present Scenario
• Cell phones have come a long way since first being
introduced in the 1900’s.
• In today’s Era the phones have incorporated
various advanced technologies like 3G & 4G
services,web based app.,high resolution
camcorders,etc.
• There are 4.1 Billion Mobile Phone
Subscribers Worldwide.
• India now has over 246 million cell phone
subscribers which is the largest for any country in
the world.
• In countries like India, cell phone usage has been
expanded to rural areas as well.
THE PROS
• Can communicate with others while
away from home.
• Send pictures to friends and family.
• Keep in touch using email and text
messaging.
• Great in case of emergency.
• 24X7 web access.
THE CONS
• Service is not always available.
• Easy to misplace/lose.
• Ring at inappropriate times.
• Subject to others’ conversations.
• Can cause car accidents.
• Toxins like arsenic, antimony, beryllium,
cadmium, copper, lead, nickel and zinc
accumulate in the environment. These can
cause cancer and neurological disorders.
