The Effect of Romantic Relationships On The Academic Performance of Grade 12 Students From Ramon Teves Pastor Memorial-Dumaguete Science High School

This document summarizes a study on the effects of romantic relationships on the academic performance of grade 12 students from Ramon Teves Pastor Memorial-Dumaguete Science High School. It includes an introduction describing the background and significance of studying this topic. It outlines the research methodology which involved collecting data through surveys from 50 students about their time spent studying and with partners, and their perspectives on motivation. The results found that most students spend more time with partners than studying, and feel motivated by their partner's affection, encouragement, and desire to have a bright future together. However, most students were not expecting help from their partners with schoolwork.

CHAPTER I:
INTRODUCTION
During adolescence, teens become interested and involved in dating because
of the desire to belong with others. Young people spend much of their time
thinking about, talking about, and being in romantic relationships. As a result, it
is clear that over the time, romantic relationships gain importance. Adolescents
crave to have an intimate romantic relationship to which love is given and
received without restriction. We can see nowadays that many students are
prioritizing their time in both academic and romantic affairs. Being students,
they are faced with an increasing workload full of assignments, research papers,
projects, and exams which require them to have a great amount of time and
attention. Thus, many people believe that students should not have a romantic
relationship since it will distract their attention and performance. On the other
hand, some also claim that romantic relationships do not always bring
disadvantages toward the students’ performance but they also serve as a great
motivation for students to study harder.
Moreover, the researcher has also observed that some of the Grade
12 students of Ramon Teves Pastor Memorial-Dumaguete Science High
School (RTPM-DSHS) have also involved themselves in a romantic
relationship. Having been in an institution which promotes excellence
among its students gave the researchers the push to choose to study
whether romantic relationships have an effect on the academic
performance of students.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
To conduct this research study, the following questions need to be addressed:

General Problem:
The study aims to determine the effects of romantic relationships on the academic
performance of students in RTPM-DSHS.

Specific Problems:
1. What are the reasons / factors that motivate students to engage in
romantic relationships while studying?
2. What are the positive and negative effects of romantic relationships to
students' academic performance?
3. What is the perspective of students on the importance of having a
relationship while studying?
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROBLEM
The objectives of this research study are:
• To find out how having a romantic relationship affects academic
performance, both positively and negatively

• To seek for the dominant factors which encourage students to have

a romantic relationship while studying
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION
The main purpose of this study is to provide information regarding the
effects of romantic relationship on the academic performance of the student.
This study also aims to enumerate some of the common factors that motivate
students to engage in romantic relationships while studying. Also, this study
aims to list down the advantages and disadvantages of having relationships
while studying. In addition, this study aims to identify the commonalities and
differences of students who are in a relationship and those who aren’t, in
terms of their academic performance.

This study limits its coverage on the Grade 12 Ramon Teves Pastor
Memorial Dumaguete Science High School (RTPM-DSHS) students only. This
study considers every aspect of students’ personal information such as their
name(optional), gender, age and section.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION
The researchers limited the study to 50 grade 12 students enrolled
in school year 2020-2021 of RTPM-DSHS who are in a romantic
relationship. The researchers selected 25 male respondents and 25
female respondents from different section to prevent bias and get
objective perceptions.

Each of the respondents are given the same questionnaires to

answer. The research locale of the study is only at RTPM-DSHS. And
this study focuses on the current grade 12 students of RTPM-DSHS,
SY 2020-2021.

METHODOLOGY
METHODOLOGY
STUDY DESIGN
The research design used in this study was the Causal-comparative/quasi-
experimental design. The researchers conducted an online survey to fifty (50)
respondents from different section of the Grade 12 students of Ramon Teves
Pastor Memorial - Dumaguete Science High School. Through the survey, the
researchers’ aim to distinguish the respondents’ perspective on having a
relationship while studying.

SAMPLING METHOD
In this study, the researchers used purposive sampling technique in
selecting the fifty (50) respondents from the Grade 12 students of Ramon Teves
Pastor Memorial - Dumaguete Science High School.
DATA COLLECTION METHOD
The type of methodology used by the researchers in gathering the data is
through online survey questionnaire and tallying. The researchers used a mixture of
close and open ended questions to better acquire the opinion and perspective of the
respondent regarding the topic.

DATA ANALYSIS METHOD

The researchers made sure that all questions were answered by the
respondents. The responses are analyzed through qualitative content analysis
and thematic analysis. In this type of analysis, the answers are evaluated to
obtain patterns, codes or frequency with which an idea is spoken about within
the context.

CONCLUSIONS AND
RECOMMENDATIONS
RECOMMENDATIONS
CONCLUSIONS
The main objective of the study is to determine the effects of romantic relationships on the
academic performance of students in RTPM-DSHS. It aimed to identify the reasons or factors that
motivate students to engage in romantic relationships while studying including the positive and
negative effects of involving in these relationships to their academic performance. It also aimed to
determine the perspective of students on the importance of having a relationship while studying.
Based on the results of the study, it is proven that there is a significant effect of romantic
relationships on the academic performance of students in RTPM-DSHS.

Teenagers nowadays usually involved themselves in romantic relationships because of

motivation, inspiration or encouragement. Basing on the results, most of the respondents said that
being in a relationship helped them have better academic performance.
The feeling of happiness, mutual support and motivation that people get are a few of the
reasons why they engage in romantic relationships. Since high school is not that easy, some people
need encouragement and support. On the other hand, the researchers found out that there is
significant direct relationship between romantic relationships and academic performance to some
students of RTPM-DSHS, thus, the more they engage in romantic relationships, the better will be
their academic performance.

The researchers conclude that if students engage in romantic relationships while studying,
there is a great possibility that it would affect their academic performance in a positive way. Grade
12 students of RTPM-DSHS who are involved in romantic relationship have reported that
romantic relationships positively affected their academic performances in a way that it gives them
motivation and support. It can be implied that romantic relationships affect ones’ academic
performance positively or negatively. However, 52% of the respondents are neutral when they
were asked if fellow students should enter relationships while still studying. The reasons between
respondents vary. Some say relationships is an inspiration while some considers it a distraction.

RECOMMENDATIONS
The researchers identified a range of areas for attention in regarding relationships
while studying, which are provided in the Results and Discussion. The following
recommendations for research are based on the study findings:

 Research to explore the impact of age in the decision-making process of

students when thinking about getting into a relationship since the majority of
the respondents who are in a relationship are of legal age.
 Extensive research in regards to the reason as to why students spend more
time doing other activities than studying.
• There is a need to explore whether there are tricks and tips in order to better
handle relationships while studying. This could include examining and
interviewing graduates or professionals who were in a relationship while
studying.
• Due to the current situation, researchers were only able to conduct online
survey questionnaires to acquire information from the respondents. If given
the chance on face to face classes, the researchers highly recommend
conducting interviews to better observe the respondent’s expressions while
answering the questions and widen the information regarding the respondent’s
perspective on relationships while studying.
