What is Public Speaking ?
• Public speaking skills refer to the talent of effectively addressing
an audience.
• Whether it is in front of a group of people you already know or a
crowd of complete strangers, your ability to communicate to
them with clarity and confidence is known as your public
speaking skills.
IMPORTANCE OF PUBLIC
SPEAKING
IMPORTANCE OF PUBLIC SPEAKING
1. To win over the crowd
Inside and outside the workplace, the power of persuasion can carry you far and it
all starts by learning those public speaking skills. Mastering public speaking results
in an increase in confidence and with that, a cool and collected presence in front of
an audience.
2. To Motivate People
A great public speaker attains the power to motivate his or her audience to do
something, stop doing something, change a behavior, or reach objectives. But to
carry an idea forward, you must be able to excite and enliven your peers,
employees, coworkers, customers.
IMPORTANCE OF PUBLIC SPEAKING
3. To Inform
From presenting research papers and PowerPoint presentations in school to
presenting ideas and pitches to your boss or client, informative public speaking is a
vital component of a successful career across all work fields.
4. Improve Communication Skills
When you write a speech, you have to think carefully about the best framework,
persuasive strategy, and diction to communicate your message to the audience. This
type of thinking can help you improve your communication skills in other areas of your
life.
DIFFICULTIES IN PUBLIC
SPEAKING
DIFFICULTIES IN PUBLIC SPEAKING
1. Problem 1: You suffer from pre-presentation anxiety
Many speakers can be fine for weeks leading up to a presentation, but in
the moments when you wait to begin your talk, your nerves can spike and
threaten your ability to deliver a clear and impactful message.

2. Problem 2: You struggle with audience engagement

They want to feel involved. Whether this is through polls or questions, the
ability to interact in some way with your content will help them absorb
and retain in ways simply lecturing can’t.
DIFFICULTIES IN PUBLIC SPEAKING
3. Problem 3: You use too many filler words
It is common for most people to use some filler phrases, such as “like,”
“so” and “you know,” both on and off stage, but it can become a problem
when they start getting noticeably overused. Then they can become a
distraction, making you come across as less intelligent or less
experienced.
4. Problem 4: You speak too fast
Sometimes when we get nervous or we believe we have a lot of content to
cover (and perhaps not enough time to do it), we start speeding through
our speech, racing to get all the content in and scoot off stage.
DIFFICULTIES IN PUBLIC SPEAKING
5. Problem 5: You forget what you’re supposed to say.
The average speaker finds it difficult to memorize large sections of text,
especially if the information is highly detailed, heavy in statistics, or filled
with important technical specifications. Instead of bluffing it or reading
off your slides, use a teleprompter.
6. Problem 6: You have trouble staying within your time slot
Going off on too many tangents in the beginning, then struggling to
squeeze in all your content right at the end while the event organizer is
waving you off stage is unprofessional and makes you look inexperienced.
DIFFICULTIES IN PUBLIC SPEAKING
7. Problem 7: Your accent is possibly hard to understand
When speaking internationally or even nationally if you speak a different
dialect to most of your audience, your accent could make you difficult to
understand.
HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR
SKILLS
HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS
1. NERVOUSNESS IS NORMAL. PRACTICE AND
PREPARE!
All people feel some physiological reactions like pounding hearts and
trembling hands. The best way to overcome anxiety is to prepare, prepare,
and prepare some more. Take the time to go over your notes several times.
Once you have become comfortable with the material, practice—a lot.
2. KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE. YOUR SPEECH IS ABOUT
THEM, NOT YOU.
Learn as much about your listeners as you can. This will help you determine
your choice of words, level of information, organization pattern, and
motivational statement.
HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS
3. ORGANIZE YOUR MATERIAL IN THE MOST EFFECTIVE
MANNER TO ATTAIN YOUR PURPOSE.
Create the framework for your speech. Write down the topic, general
purpose, specific purpose, central idea, and main points. Make sure to grab
the audience’s attention in the first 30 seconds.

4. WATCH FOR FEEDBACK AND ADAPT TO IT.

Keep the focus on the audience. Gauge their reactions, adjust your
message, and stay flexible. Delivering a canned speech will guarantee that
you lose the attention of or confuse even the most devoted listeners.
HOW TO IMRPOVE YOUR SKILLS
5. LET YOUR PERSONALITY COME THROUGH.
Be yourself, don’t become a talking head—in any type of communication.
You will establish better credibility if your personality shines through, and
your audience will trust what you have to say if they can see you as a real
person.

6. USE HUMOR, TELL STORIES, AND USE EFFECTIVE

LANGUAGE.
Inject a funny anecdote in your presentation, and you will certainly grab your
audience’s attention. Audiences generally like a personal touch in a speech.
A story can provide that.
HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS
7. DON’T READ UNLESS YOU HAVE TO. WORK FROM AN
OUTLINE.
By maintaining eye contact with the audience, you keep the focus on
yourself and your message. A brief outline can serve to jog your memory
and keep you on task.

8. USE YOUR VOICE AND HANDS EFFECTIVELY. OMIT

NERVOUS GESTURES.
Nonverbal communication carries most of the message. Good delivery does
not call attention to itself, but instead conveys the speaker’s ideas clearly
and without distraction.
HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS
9. GRAB ATTENTION AT THE BEGINNING, AND CLOSE WITH A
DYNAMIC END.
“Today I’m going to talk to you about X”? Most people don’t. Instead, use a
startling statistic, an interesting anecdote, or concise quotation. Conclude
your speech with a summary and a strong statement that your audience is
sure to remember.

10. USE AUDIOVISUAL AIDS WISELY.

Too many can break the direct connection to the audience, so use them
sparingly. They should enhance or clarify your content, or capture and
maintain your audience’s attention.
