TABLE TENNIS
Basic table tennis Rules
SERVICE RULES
 The service must start with the ball in an
open palm.
 The ball must be thrown vertically , at
least 16 cm .
 The ball must be above and behind the
table throughout the serve.
 After throwing the ball, the server must
get their free arm and hand out of the
way.
General Match Play
 You have two serves before it is your
opponent’s turn to serve twice.
 At 10-10 it’s deuce. You get one serve
each and must win by two clear points.
 If you are playing a best of 3,5, or 7 (as
opposed to just one set ) you have to
change ends after each game.
A let is called if...........
 An otherwise good serve touches the
net.
 The receiver isn’t ready ( and doesn’t try
to hit the ball ).
 If play is disturbed by something outside
of the player’s control.
A point is lost.........
 The service is missed.
 The service is not returned.
 The shot goes into the net.
 A shot goes off the table without
touching the court.
 A player moves the table, touches the
net or touches the table with their free
hand during play.
Table Tennis Scoring Rules
 A competitive game of table tennis played
to the best of five or seven games. The
first player to get to 11 points in a game is
the winner. However, if a game is tied at
10-10 , a player must win a game by two
clear points. You do not lose service if you
lose a point each player must serve for
two points in a row before handling the
service over their opponent.
Officials are divided into two categories

STATE UMPIRE
 Attend in state umpire course
 Pass a written exam
 Pass an oral exam
 Complete 10 hours of unsupervised umpiring at a
tournament /competition.
 Be mentored for a minimum of 4 tournament matches
 Be assisted by umpiring in a minimum of 4
tournament matches containing a variety of
conditions.
 Be a participated of life member of TTA or a Life
member of an affiliated organisation.
National Umpire
 Complete 2 years of being a State Umpire.
 Attend national umpire course.
 Pass a written exam.
 Pass an oral exam.
 Be assessed by umpiring in a minimum of
6 matches preferably by an assessor from
another state where practical.
 Be a participant of a life member of TTA or
a life member of unaffiliated organisation.
International Umpire
 Complete two years as a national
umpire.
 Pass the IFF International Umpires
Exam( conducted every two years).
 Be a Participant of life member of TTF
or a Life member of an affiliated
organisation.
Two Types of Referee
 National referee
 International Referee
National Referee
 Must hold a National or International
Umpire Accreditation.
 Attend a national Referees Course.
 Pass a written exam
 Be assessed at a national /higher level
tournament.
International Referee
 Must hold an International Umpire
Accreditation.
 Demonstrate expertise as a National
Referee
 Attend a ITTF Referee course and pass
the exam.
 Be assessed at an international
Tournament.
