Subject Name: Electric Drive
Subject Code: 6EE4-05
Introduction: Objective, scope and outcome of
the course Virendra Sharma, Electrical Engineering Department Course outcome: After successful completion of this course, the students should be able to Develop capability to select a suitable DC Motor and custom devices for Electrical drives. Also acquire detailed knowledge on AC-DC, DC-AC and DC-DC Converters and their modelling. Acquire knowledge on how DC Drives may pollute the power supply and how to mitigate such pollution. Design the speed control and current control loops of a DC Motor drive. Learn about various AC machines which is used in AC drive system with their working principle & controlling scheme. Evaluate the performance of AC drives on the basis of the speed-torque curve. Introduction: Whenever motion or speed control is required in large number of industrial and domestic applications like Transportation system Rolling mills Paper machines Textile mills Machine tools Fans Pumps Robots Washing machines etc. Systems employed for motion control are called electric drives. It may employ any of prime movers such as diesel or petrol engines, gas or steam turbines, steam engines, hydraulic motors and electric motors. If we use Electric motors for supplying mechanical energy for motion control in any drive system are called as Electrical Drives. Introduction: It is the study of the electric system involving controlling of electric motors in both steady state and dynamic operation. It is achieved through taking into account the characteristics of the mechanical loads and the behavior of the power electronic converters.

SUPPLY EQUIPMENT MOTOR LOAD Basic components Of Electric Drives: It is the study of the electric system involving controlling of electric motors in both steady state and dynamic operation. It is achieved through taking into account the characteristics of the mechanical loads and the behavior of the power electronic converters. Basic components Of Electric Drives: Sources may be two type (1) AC and (2) DC type AC sources uses as per requirement of Electric motor and power modulator which is used for supplying the mechanical power to demanded by mechanical load. Also DC sources uses as per requirement of Electric motor and power modulator which is used for supplying the mechanical power to demanded by mechanical load. Motor may be use as per application of electric Drive AC Motor DC Motor Power Modulator The power modulator regulates the output power of the source. It controls the power from the source to the motor in such a manner that motor transmits the speed torque characteristic required by the load. Basic components Of Electric Drives: Control Unit The control unit controls the power modulator which operates at small voltage and power levels. The control unit also operates the power modulator as desired. It also generates the commands for the protection of power modulator and motor. An input command signal which adjusts the operating point of the drive, from an input to the control unit. Sensing Unit It senses the certain drive parameter like motor current and speed. It mainly required either for protection or for closed loop operation of drive system. ADVANTAGES: Feasible control characteristics Available in wide range of speed torque and power Higher efficiency Lower noise Cleaner operation Low maintenance requirements Electric energy is easy to transport Thanks
