Women’s health and hygiene has been one of the key concerns over the years
across the world. The awareness on menstrual hygiene and usage of sanitary
napkins is virtually absent in rural areas. Poor menstrual hygiene can cause
fungal infections, repeated infections to RTI, cervical cancer and vulnerable to
infertility. Reproductive hygiene education and sexual education is not part of
any education system in India.
The project intends to build an enterprise model on a pilot basis in the working
areas where group(s) of women would be fostered to run the business by
themselves with handholding support and overall supervision by the
implementing organization’s objectives i’e in view of generating demand and
creating awareness among the targeted beneficiaries i.e. adolescent girls and
women on the importance of personal hygiene and menstrual hygiene
management in the marginalized communities.

• The Ministry of Textiles hopes that jute-based sanitary napkins,
produced using indigenous raw materials as against imported wood
pulp, would assist farmers in getting a remunerative price and
enhance employment generation for women.
• The Ministry through the National Jute Board has earlier sponsored
a project to Indian Jute Industries’ Research Association (IJIRA) on
development of jute-based, low-cost sanitary napkins. Now, the
government wants farmers to involve in the project. The Ministry
added, “ Currently, the pilot project being envisaged for jute sanitary
napkin is expected to produce one lakh jute sanitary napkins per
day. The project will assist jute farmers in getting remunerative price
and will enhance women employment generation.”
• According to the government, most of the sanitary
napkins available in the market are derived out of wood
pulp which is imported from the USA/China. “IJIRA-
developed sanitary napkin out of jute pulp where both
jute fibres and jute sticks have been used in optimum
ratio would be an import substitute of wood pulp,” the
Ministry had stated in Rajya Sabha in February last year.
Jute-based sanitary napkin has been certified by the
National Test House, Kolkata, and it meets the
requirement as laid down in IS:5405-1980.

MARKET RESEARCH
Sanitary napkin is an essential item in the women
hygiene segment. The product has the good market in
the both developing and developed countries as well .
It was found during the informal discussions with the
girls & women that almost 80% of them are used
rags and could not afford the expenses to use pads .
This is a grave problem and needs immediate
attention which made us to seriously think on the
possibilities to cater to this unmet need by a activity
which would use women as a key to change .
CONCLUSION
In rural areas though the environment is thought to be
comparatively clean than city areas, now-a-days in rural
areas also the living atmosphere is gradually
deteriorating and due to the lack of awareness/adequate
knowledge among the people their living statuses have
not been seen at all hygienic.
Thus, if the use of hygienic sanitary napkins could be
initiated among the rural women and girls at low cost
then growth of different diseases could be arrested or
minimize to a large extent among them.
