WOOD FORMING
TECHNIQUES
GROUP 2 PRESENTATION
What is Wood Forming?
Wood forming is the activity or skill of making items from wood through
various techniques like wood carving, joinery, carpentry, and woodturning.
Types of Wood Forming
There are 2 types of wood forming, namely:
• Wasting method &
• Manipulation Method
Wasting Method
These techniques are formed with a solid piece of wood. Majority of the
wood is removed & “wasted” to create the form.
The methods includes:
• CNC Routing
• Wood Turning / Lathe
• Wood Carving
• Laser Cutting
CNC Routing
CNC means Computer Numeric Code
CNC routing is the process of using a computer to design
& a router to produce a 3D copy.
• It is used for many applications from carving intricate 3D
object to cutting out mass produced flat pack furniture.
• It is extremely accurate, has a good tolerance & wastes a
lot of material.
• It can produce hundreds of products and combat the cost of
the initial set up time and designing time. The CNC Router works on
a XYZ axis.
Wood Turning / Lathe
• Lathing is done by fixing a piece of wood
between two centres.
• Cutting, sanding, knurling, drilling, facing,
turning processes can be performed to carve
out unusual shapes on woods.
Wood Carving
Wood carving is a very time consuming process that is done
by hand.
The maker creates shapes in the surface of a block of timber
using chisel and gouges.
The process is highly skilled and takes years to master
fluently.
This process is expensive as you have to pay for a skilled
crafts person to create your idea
Laser Cutting
Laser cutting is like routing In that it cuts only
2D sheet materials.
It is a technique of cutting board to enable the
fibres of wood and manufactured boards to bend
enough to create curved shapes.
Laser cutter uses vector design programs to plot
an X and Y course unlike CNC routers which
have a Z axis too.
Manipulation Method
There are two main ways to manipulate wood into a new form. These are:-
Steam Laminating
bending
Others include Water Bending, Kerf-Cut Bending
Steam Bending
Steam bending is a process of heating wood in a
steam box to make the timber pliable. This make the
wood easy to bend without splintering and breaking
The timber is placed in the steam chamber until
saturated.
The timber is then clamped around a former until all
the moisture has evaporated and the timber is fixed
in that position Steam Bending Process
Laminating
Laminating is easily achieved in schools. A former is made to
the correct profile.
Timber is cut into very thin strips or lamins which are slightly
longer than required.
These are then layered with Glue and clamped around the
former
The glue sets and the item is removed
The piece then requires planning to shape and cutting. This
process has a lot of cleaning up
Laminating process
• Manipulating wood is very good as it tends to be very strong, uses less
material and form shapes that cannot normally be created from straight
timber or sheets.
• The processes are both relatively quick and use former or moulds to set the
wood around.
• Steam bending usually works better with hardwoods as well. Ash, oaks,
hickory, and beech are the best for this method.
• For lamination bending, you want to make sure you use a thin piece of
wood. You can work with any type of wood like mahogany, maple, ash,
beech, spruce, oaks, or hickory.
