WHO ARE THE XHOSA’s-amaXhosa
The Xhosa people are a South African cultural
group who emphasise traditional practices
and customs inherited from their forefathers.
The Xhosa are not a tribe but they are a true
nation, a group of a tribes inhabiting one
land at Eastern Cape and united by a
common language.
WHAT ARE THEIR LANGUAGE?
Xhosa people speak isiXhosa, an indigenous
language. It is a Bantu language closely related to
Zulu, Swazi and Ndebele and it is also
characterised by the click sound.
IsiXhosa has three basic click consonants: dental
click written with the letter ‘C’, an alveolar click
written with letter ‘Q’, and a lateral click written
wit letter ‘X’.

WHAT ARE XHOSA’S
RITUALS,TRADITIONS AND
CUSTOMS?
The Xhosa people have a range of
cultural customs that adhere by; some
traditional practices include the initiation
of the males when they are of age, which
involves them going to initiation school
(the mountain). Another practice lobola,
brides must be paid with cattle and a rich
men may have several wives.
After giving birth, a new mother remains
secluded in her house for ten days or
more. This is the first rite in their
traditions and during that time they used
to protect the baby from sorcery by
burning or burying the umbilical cord. At
the end of the period of seclusion, they
perfom ritual which they sacrifice a goat.
WHAT ARE THE XHOSA
BELIEFS/RELIGION?
Xhosa people are predominantly
Christians but they still honour
their ancestors because in Xhosa
tradition the ancestors act as
intermediaries between the living
and God; they are honoured in
rituals in order to bring good
fortune.
Their religion has become a unique
blend of Christianity and
traditional African beliefs(supreme
being uThixo or uQamata).
WHAT DO XHOSA EAT TRADITIONAL
AND DRINK TRADITIONAL?? (FOOD
AND DRINK PREFERENCES)
The Xhosa traditional diet consists mainly of
meat and maize and their food is eaten with
hands and traditionally men and women eat
separately.
Traditional food include :
Linkobe, peeled off fresh maize grains and
boiled until cooked
Isophi, corn with beans or peas soup
Umlekwa, a dish made with free-range
chicken
Umngqusho, a dish made from white maize
and sugar beans.
Umphokoqo, crumble pap.
Their traditional drink is Umqombothi-a
beer made from maize, maize malt,
sorghum malt, yeast and water.
WHAT ARE THEIR LIFESTYLES
(ART AND CRAFTS EVEN
ATTIRE)?
Xhosa lifestyle has been adapted to Western
traditons, the Xhosa people still wear
traditional attire for special cultural
activities.
Xhosa people commonly wear a plain
white or red wrapper.
Men wear ingcawa a white and black
blanket adorned with ukurhaswa. They
also wear beads(isichebe and isidanga)
around their neck.
Women wear Incebetha-a well prepared
small blanket that is used as a bra and
they also wear ifulu-a garment that is
worn underneath,below the belt,and ifulu
is covered by isikhakha and umbhaco.
Art and crafts: traditional crafts include
breadwork,weaving,pottery and all the
traditional attires because they are made
by hands.
