Hot work refers to any activity that produces heat, sparks or flame, such as welding, grinding or cutting, and poses a fire risk. Common hot work activities include welding, cutting concrete, and grinding. Hot work can ignite flammable vapors and cause fires. Proper personal protective equipment and fire prevention equipment must be used when performing hot work. A permit to work system is also required when hot work is conducted in hazardous areas to analyze job hazards and stop work during fuel deliveries. Hazardous zones are classified around gas stations based on the likelihood of a flammable atmosphere.
