OVERVIEW

Successive governments of the republic of Zambia had since 1991 pondered the prospect
of introducing a National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) which gained momentum by
2011 in line with the Universal Health Coverage agenda. The National Health Insurance
Act No. 2 of 2018 led to the establishment of the National Health Insurance Scheme
(NHIS) after comprehensive consultations with various stakeholders under the
management of the National Health Insurance Management Authority (NHIMA) whose
implementation was commenced on October 1, 2019 setting Zambia on the road to
provision of access to quality essential health-care services to its citizens.
HATA is focused on the access of this scheme at Chipata Level 1 Hospital by the youth of
that community. Our efforts range from sensitization exercises to training workshops
aimed at bridging the knowledge gap in order to ensure that the demand for the scheme is
created.
PROBLEM STATEMENT

The most affected people in Chipata compound with regards to NHIS are youths, children and the aged
citizens. This cluster of individuals are the majority with unemployment and fairly poor education
attainment levels, as such there is less understanding of NHIS services, procedures and requirements. Our
findings suggest that youths in this compound fall prey to the above sentiment and this raised concern to us.

They need guidance on the availability of the service at Chipata Level 1 hospital and how to go about
accessing it. Further, there is also lack of adequate understanding of the benefits and cost of the service.
Hence the need for us to support in the demand creation for the service among the community youth.
