Intro to Pattern Recognition

Pattern recognition is the process of transforming patterns from measurement space into classification space to classify objects into categories. It involves structured information analysis at qualitative and quantitative levels and is essential for building predictive models. Applications include statistical data analysis, signal processing, image analysis, and machine learning.

Pattern Recognition
In short, the process of pattern recognition can be
defined as one of transforming patterns from
measurement space into classification space.
Pattern Recognition
The purpose of pattern recognition is to classify
objects, i.e. materials, into classes, categories
or groups.
Pattern recognition aims at finding and
characterizing structured information (patterns)
within experimental data distributions.
Pattern Recognition
Information within data can be structured at two levels:
-Qualitative
-Quantitative

Pattern Recognition
To build predictive models, supervised methods make use of
additional information, besides the one provided by the
descriptors. More specifically, qualitative supervised
methods necessitate a class index to be defined for each
sample of the training set (i.e., the set of samples used to
build the model), codifying the membership of that sample
to a given class. Analogously, quantitative supervised
methods require the quantitative property that needs to be
predicted (e.g., the concentration of a compound of interest,
or a physical or sensory property) to be known for the
training samples.
Pattern Recognition
It has applications in: Statistical data analysis,
