Introduction
Covid-19 has upended many areas of our lives, not the least of which is
education. Due to the pandemic and worldwide shutdown, distance education
became a necessity at lightning speed. More than 1.5 billion students or 91.3
percent of global enrollments, were directly affected by school closures at the
height of the COVID -19 outbreak in early April.
Several public schools in Sorsogon Province maximized the use of different
distance learning modality for the education to continue. In Danao National
High School, printed modular and online class are used as a form of distance
learning. The researchers want to find out if these modalities have an impact
on the academic performance of the students. This is the issue that the
researcher want to find out.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This investigation aims to determine the effects of distance learning to the
academic performance of students in Danao National High School for the
school year 2020-2021. This study will be conducted at Danao, Bulan,
Sorsogon.

Specifically, the researchers seek to answer the following questions:


1.What is the performance level of students in Danao National School before
pandemic?
2. What is the learning delivery mode in Danao National High School in the
time of pandemic?
3.What is the effect of blended learning modality to the academic
performance of students in Danao National High School?
4. What can be proposed to improve the academic performance of students
in this time of pandemic?
SCOPE OF DELIMITATION
This study focuses mainly on the impact of distance learning modality to
the academic performance of students in Danao National High School for the
S.Y 2020-2021.
The research focuses on Grade 7 to 12 students of Danao National High
School. The participants has no age limit as long as they belong in Grade 7 to
12 of Danao National High School at Danao ,Bulan ,Sorsogon.
Students from Grade 7 to 12 of the said school who will not be chosen to
be interviewed are excluded in this research. Also, elementary students are
not included in this study.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This study will be conducted at Danao National High School, which is situated in Danao ,
Bulan , Sorsogon for the school year 2020-2021. Moreover it will determine the effects of
distance learning to the academic performance of students. The participants of this study
are composed of twelve (12) students coming from grade 7 to Grade 12.
The proposed study will benefit the following:
STUDENTS :
This study will enlighten the mindset of the students about the importance of
distance learning , they can continue their studies, and can also improve their performance
and behavior. It serves as an assessing tool on their performance. The development of this
study will able them to make good decisions , and making them understand why government
decide to implement this kind of learning and incorporate themselves at the innovative
learning approaches of the society.
FACULTY/ TEACHERS:
This will help them know what factors affect the students performance in distance
learning. It will also give them insights on what effective way should they practice to ensure
that the result of academic performance are not bad but good. And also to encourage each
of the student by means of virtual study even there are lot of trials that teachers and
students are facing now.
SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR
The study will help the school administrator to distinguish what
factors could affect the performance through this distance learning. This
study may also give them insights which would encourage the students,
to be responsible and improve their performance, by implementing a
good plan for this learning modality so that students should have an
interest and give their best on their studies .This will also help the
teachers pinpoint the weaknesses of the students.

PARENTS
This will help them recognize that their actions and perceptions

toward their children regarding distance learning can greatly affect their
children’s interest and time management as well as motivation in
learning the subject. Through this study the parents can provide
situations and encouragement which will inspire their children to study
hard with this new learning modality.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
 ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
-The action or process of carrying out or accomplishing an action, task, or
function( Meriam Webster)
-It is the action in which the researcher wanted to know the impact of
distance learning to the performance of students in Danao National High School.
 DISTANCE LEARNING
- a method of studying in which lectures are broadcast or classes are conducted
by correspondence or over the internet without the students needing to attend a
school or college. Also called distance education.( Meriam Webster)
- It is a way to continue the learning of students in Danao National High School.
 IMPACT
- a change which is a result or consequence of an action or
other cause.(Meriam Webster)

The purpose of this study is to determine the Impact of Distance Learning to the
Academic Performance of students in Danao National High School. Thus, the review of
literature focuses on variables known to influence academic performances. Such research
will aid in the development and implementation of the online review session.
Distance Education popularity, due in part to its effectiveness. Pedagogy according to
Markel(2000), should not have to be compromised based upon instruction mode. Various
educational fields have studied the effectiveness of distance education and can be
referenced for the development of the academic performance of students on the online
session.
The research showed that the students using web-based education had a 20% higher
success rate than students using face-to-face education. (Schutte, 2001).
REVIEW OF RELATED STUDIES
The high school from which students graduate ,their learning capabilities, their motivation for
success ,demographic features and their educational experience timeline are some of the useful
factors determine whether a student will be successful in face-to-face learning(Piatkowski and jurczyk
, 2000).
The students of Danao National High School prefer to have face- to-face in terms of learnings. New
learning modality is a great help , but it takes hard to understand and cope up .They can not focus
well and learn well ,because there are lot of things that hindrance their learnings.
This variable can be categorized to four backgrounds (especially age and gender)
preparedness(working skills) self-respect and self-sufficiency and motivation(Gibson , 2000)
Students should practice and adapt these characteristics , so that it makes them easily accept and
cooperate what our government has implemented .

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
RESEARCH DESIGN
Quantitative research is a research strategy that focuses on quantifying the collection and
analysis of data. It is formed from a deductive approach, where emphasis is placed on the
testing of theory shaped by empiricist and positivist philosophies.(Wikipedia)
An action research approach was used as the research designed this study. According to
Kemmis & Taggart (2000) and Cohen et.al (2007), action research is an approach to improve
education by changing and starting with small cycles where problems are identified and the
researcher(s) plan and implements the interventions.
Through this action research method, we studied the perceptions that distance learning are
really difficult for them to adjust and adapt. There are lot of problem that affects the
learnings and improvement of students in their performance.
RESPONDENT OF THE STUDY
The respondent of the study are the selected students from grade 7 to grade 12 in Danao
National High School. They are the ones who have enough knowledge to answer the
questionnaire that the researcher gave to them which supplies the information that are need.
They are the ones that the researchers need because they already experienced how distance
learning challenge them. Furthermore, the researchers want to know their past experiences
in traditional education ,so that the researchers can track if it is related to the study. In that
way the researchers can say if distance learning can affect the academic performance of the
students since the day it was implemented.
The researchers need at least 12 students to become the respondents of the study in Danao
National High School at Danao, Bulan, Sorsogon.
INSTRUMENT OF THE STUDY
A survey has been used as the data collection tool of this study. A
survey with question split in different categories has been
implemented. Moreover ,the survey will be distributed to
students through copy of questionnaire.
DATA COLLECTION PROCEDURE
The researcher aims to determine the impact of distance learning to the
academic performance of students in Danao National High School. The
researcher will conduct a study with the help of 12 respondents coming from
grade 7 to 12 to answer the problem that the researcher want to be solved.
Soft copy of survey questionnaire will be given to the 12 respondent through
messenger. It is a safe mode of gathering data because of the national health
issue. After gathering the data, researcher will conduct a statistical treatment
to finalize whether their study is effective .
The researcher will choose the survey questionnaire as a tool in gathering
the data. Both textual and numerical are being used, because it will elicit
opinions and numerical data from the respondent through survey
questionnaire.
DATA ANALYSIS PLAN
In order to extract useful results for reaching a strong conclusion and decision making, it is important to
analyze the data and then obtaining a clear conclusion about the data is the process of analysis. Analysis
process also includes examining the data, building relation of different data types with each other and
trends of different factors.
The researcher used graph forms. All data collected in this research were analyzed using graphs. The
frequency count, percentage and ranking were used to determine the data collected. The type of
statistical analysis used in this research was random sampling.
To come up with the result, this formula will be used:

Proposed Solution
The researchers propose a plan to improve the academic performance of
students in the light of blended learning modality in Danao National High
School.
 Teachers shall monitor the students from time to time.
 Administrators must provide free Wi-Fi zone so nearby students can utilize it
during online class.
 Barangay officials should help in the distribution and retrieval of printed
modules.
 Parents must be oriented about the blended learning so they can guide their
children well.
 Students must be reminded always of their compliance through messenger or
any online platform.
