CHP 2 Linear Equation in One Variable by Priya Kumari Sinha

This document discusses linear equations in one variable. It defines linear equations as those with terms having a maximum power of 1. It distinguishes between expressions and equations, with expressions being mathematical combinations and equations stating two expressions are equal. It provides methods for solving equations with the variable on one or both sides, including transposing and deduction. It also discusses forming equations from word problems and using cross multiplication to solve equations with fractions.

LINEAR

EQUATION IN
ONE VARIABLE
By priya kumari sinha
CONTENTS:
 Introduction
 Difference between expression and equations
 Solving equations having variable on one side
 Solving equations having variable on both sides
 Forming equations
 Cross multiplication
INTRODUCTION
 Linear equation in one variable is made up of three terms namely linear, equation and one
variable. Here, linear means that each terms in the expression has the maximum power of 1.
For example: 2x +1=7 ,here the maximum power is 1 (as in 2x^1) . Now the equation terms
means there is a sign of equals to{=} and thus LHS and RHS are formed. And the term one
variable means that there is only one variable is present ,if there is x variable in the equation
there is only and only one variable in it.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EXPRESSION
AND EQUATION

Expression
 An expression is a meaningful combination Of mathematical symbols, including numbers,
variables, operations and brackets.
•Example: x^2–3xy+2y^2 ,5y+3 e.t.c
 Sometimes we evaluate an expression: we need to be given the values of variable to do that.

Equation •Equation is a
statement that two expression are the same (=).
• Example: 14x+15= 71, 5y-3=6 e.t.c
•Sometimes we solve equation with variables: we find the values of the variable that make it
true.
SOLVING EQUATIONS HAVING
VARIABLE ON ONE SIDE
1. 3x – 5 = 10 1. 3x – 5 = 10

Method 1 ( transposing) Method 2 ( deduction )

# 3x-5=10 # 3x-5=10
= 3x=10+5 =3x-5+5=10+5
= 3x=15 =3x=15
= x= 15/3 =5 =x=15/3
=x= 5
SOLVING EQUATIONS HAVING
VARIABLE ON BOTH SIDES
1. 9x + 2 = 4x – 5 2. 9x+2= 4x-5
Method 1 (transposing) Method 2( deduction)

#9x+2= 4x-5 #9x+2 = 4x-5

=9x-4x= -5-2 =9x+2-2 = 4x-2-5
=5x = -7 =9x-4x= -2-5
= x = -7/5 = 5x =-7 =x= -7/5
FORMING EQATION
 Sum of two numbers is 50. One is less than other by 10.

Ans: Let us assume one number be x,

Second number will be x – 10
= x+x-10 = 50
= 2x = 50+10
= 2x = 60 = x = 60/2 = x= 30
CROSS MULTIPLICATION
•If ax + b / cx+ d = p/q then q(ax+b) = p(cx-d).
This is called cross multiplication.
Example: ( 2 – 9z /17 – 4z = 4/5z )
= 5(2-9z) = 4(17-4z)
= 10-45z = 68-16z
= - 45z+16z = 68-10
= - 29z = 58
= z = 58/29 = 2
