Interlocking Concrete Pavement

Interlocking concrete pavement consists of solid concrete pavers separated by joints filled with small stones. Water enters the joints and infiltrates into an open-graded crushed stone base layer below, where it is stored and infiltrated into the soil. The stones in the joints provide permeability while the base filters stormwater and reduces pollutants. Interlocking pavers are made from cement, gravel, sand, and optional color pigments. They are manufactured by mixing and pressing the ingredients into molds under pressure and vibration. The finished pavers are durable, permeable, and come in various shapes, colors and textures for different applications ranging from pedestrian to heavy vehicle use.

Introduction

Interlocking concrete pavement comprises a layer of solid

concrete pavers separated by joints filled with small stones.
Water enters the joints between the pavers and into an
“open-graded” base-crushed stone layer with no small or
fine particles. The void spaces among the crushed stone
store water and infiltrate it back into the soil subgrade. The
stones in the joints provide permeability, and the base filters
stormwater and helps reduce pollutants.
Introduction
Composition

Interlocking Pavers are made

from namely four ingredients:
• Dry mix of Gravel
• Cement
• Sand
• Desired color for aesthetic
purpose
Manufacturing Process
• The ingredients are
mixed together by
adding very little water
to it.
• The mixture is then
moved on conveyor
belts and then funneled
into the pavers mold.
• Pressure is applied to
the mixture in the mold
and it is vibrated.
Manufacturing Process
• Pressure and
vibrations cause the
water to set which
helps in binding the
aggregates together.
• Finally, the mold is
removed and perfectly
finished pavers are
obtained.
Characteristics
• It comes in a range of shapes, colors, textures, and
patterns to complement any home style and enhance
neighborhood character and appeal.
• It can be mechanically installed, thereby saving time and
money. The precast concrete paving units are immediately
ready for traffic because there’s no waiting for curing.
• It is made with high strength, compressed concrete that
resists abrasion, freeze-thaw damage, and degradation
from deicing salts.
Characteristics
• Use of permeable interlocking block pavements in cities
can help replenish depleting underground source of water,
filter pollutants before they reach open water sources, help
reduce storm water runoff and reduce the quantum of water
drainage structures.
• The cost of maintenance is much lower than the bituminous
pavements.

Applications
1. Non-traffic Areas: Building Premises, footpaths, malls,
pedestrian plaza, landscapes, monuments premises,
premises, public garden/parks, shopping complexes, bus
terminus, parking areas and railway platform, etc.
2. Light Traffic: Car parks, office driveway, housing colony
roads, office/commercial complexes, rural roads,
residential colony roads, farm houses, etc.
3. Medium traffic: Boulevard, city streets, small market
roads, intersections/rotaries on low volume roads, utility
cuts on arteries, service stations, etc.
Applications
4. Heavy and very heavy traffic: Container/Bus terminals,
ports/dock yards, mining areas, roads in industrial
complexes, heavy-duty roads on expansive soils, bulk
cargo handling areas, factory floors and pavements, airport
pavement, etc.
