Speed Control of Brushless DC Motors

The document discusses speed control of brushless DC motors. It explains that the motor's rotational speed decreases with increasing load torque, but maintaining a constant input voltage along the speed-torque line PR can keep speed constant. It then describes the main components of a BLDC motor control system, including the power, current control, logic, setting comparison, and power supply circuits. The current control circuit detects and regulates current to prevent speed deviations from the set point. The logic circuit determines winding excitation based on Hall sensor feedback. The setting comparison circuit monitors motor speed versus the set speed signal.

SPEED CONTROL

OF
BRUSHLESS DC MOTOR
(FOR ANY LOAD TORQUE)
PRINCIPLE OF SPEED
CONTROL
• The Rotational Speed-Torque characteristics of a brushless DC motor show a
negative sloping characteristic when its speed is not controlled which is
similar to that of a brushed DC motor.
When no load is applied and the input voltage is set
at V2 , the operation point of the motor becomes P,
and the rotational speed is N1. When the load torque
T1 is applied, the operation point shifts to Q, and
the rotational speed slows to N2, however, the
rotational speed returns to N1 if the voltage is raised
to V3. Therefore, since the rotational speed changes
whenever the load torque changes, the speed control
mechanism will only have to change the input
voltage whenever a change in the speed is seen in
order to maintain a constant speed on the PR line.
CONTROL METHODS OF BLDC
MOTORS
• The drive circuit of the brushless DC motor is connected in the configuration , and
is comprised of five main blocks.
•Power circuit
•Current control circuit
•Logic circuit
•Setting comparison circuit
•Power supply circuit
• Power Circuit
This circuit uses six transistors to control the current
flow in the motor windings. The transistors provided at
the top and bottom turn on and off
repeatedly according to a predetermined sequence,
thereby controlling the current flow to the motor
windings
• Current Control Circuit
The current flow to the motor varies according to the
load. It is constantly detected and controlled so that
the speed will not deviate from the set
speed

• Logic Circuit Setting Comparison Circuit

The logic circuit detects the rotor position by receiving This circuit compares the motor speed signal against the
feedback signals from the motor's Hall effect IC and determines speed setting signal in order to determine whether the
the excitation sequence of motor windings. motor speed is higher or lower than
the set speed.

• Power Supply Circuit

This circuit converts a commercial power supply into the
voltage necessary to drive the motor and control circuits
