Painting

What is painting?
The expression of ideas and
emotions, with the creation of
certain aesthetic qualities
History
Cave dwellers were the earliest artists. Colored
drawings of animals, dating from about 30,000 to
10,000 B.C have been found on the walls of caves in
southern France and in Spain. Many of these drawings
are amazingly well preserved because the caves were
sealed up for many centuries.

The history of painting is a never-ending chain that

began with the very first pictures ever made. Each
style grows out of the styles that came before it.
Elements
Color - The most important element because it sets
the tone for how viewers feel about the work.

Tone - It is, essentially, how light or dark a paint is

when you strip away the color.

Line - Line is defined as a narrow mark made by a

brush.

Shape - A shape is an enclosed area that is made

when lines meet.

Space - It can be used to great effect in paintings.

Texture - This can be interpreted as a pattern
within the painting.

Composition - Composition is the arrangement of

the painting.

Direction - Format of a painting part.

Size - Refers to the scale of the painting.

Time and Movement - All of the other elements

affect how the viewer perceives and looks at a
painting.
