Definition of Community according to experts.
“A community is a social group with some degree of we feeling
and living in a given area.”- Bogardus (Sociology, 1952)
“A collection of people within a geographic area among whom
there is some degree of mutual identification, interdependence or
organization of activities.” – Eshleman and Cashion (Sociology
“A community is a spatial or territorial unit of social organization
in which people have a sense of identity and a feeling of
belonging.” – Dotson (1991)
AlexInkeles (What is Sociology, 1965) presented the three
elements that are relevant as a basis of a community.
AlexInkeles (What is Sociology, 1965) presented the three
elements that are relevant as a basis of a community.
1. When a set of households is relatively concentrated in
delimited geographical area;
2. Their residents exhibit a substantial degree of integrated
social interaction; and
3. They have a sense of common membership, of belonging
together which is not based exclusively on ties of
consanguinity.
Mike O’Donnel, 1997 has analyzed the various definitions of community and
grouped them in three main category.
The term “Community” is employed to describe a fixed locality (a given
geographic area) as a basis of social organization. Thus, from this point of
view, a traditional rural village is a community where people are born, live
and die.
Community is used to refer to a local social system or set of relationships
that center upon a given locality. From sociological point of view, it is the
concentration of relationships, rather than the geographical factor that
matters.
The term “Community” is also used to describe a quality of
relationship which produces a strong sense of shared identity. This
usage does not give any importance to the spatial or geographical
aspect of the community. It does not depend on physical
whereabouts or even on people having met each other.

2. Definition of Recreation according to experts.
“Simply defined, recreation refers to experiences and activities chosen
and pursued by the individual in his/her free time; the basis being that
the experience sought and activities pursued, in some real sense of the
word, “re-creates” the individual so that he/she may be refreshed to
enable him/her to resume daily obligations whatever those may be.” –
John Ap (1986) Recreation trends and implications for government. In
R. Castle, D. Lewis & J. Mangan (eds) Work, Leisure and Technology.
Melbourne, Longman Cheshire, 167-83 (p.167).
“Recreation is considered as an activity through which leisure may be
experienced and enjoyed but it is also seen as a social institution,
socially organized for social purposes.” – Grant Cushman and Allan
Laidler (1990) Recreation, Leisure and Social Policy. Occasional Paper
No. 4, Canterbury, NZ, Dept of’ Parks, Recreation and Tourism. Lincoln
University, p.2.
“Recreation can be viewed as personal experience (what it does to a
person), as activities (the forms it takes) or as an institution (the
structure in which it is made available to the community). Taken yet
another way recreation can be viewed as a process (what happens to an
individual) and as a structure (the framework in which recreation is
practiced).”- George Torkildsen (1986) Leisure and Recreation
Management. 2nd edn, London, E. & F. N. Spon, p. 164.
“Recreation is an act or experience, selected by the individual during his
leisure time to meet a personal want or desire, primarily his own
satisfaction.”- T.S. Yukic (1970) Fundamentals of Recreation. 2nd edn, New
York, Harper & Row, p.5.
“Recreation is an emotional condition within an individual human being that
flows from a well-being and satisfaction. It is characterized by feeling of
mastery, achievement, exhilaration, acceptance, success, personal worth and
pleasure… It reinforces a positive self-image. Recreation is a response to
aesthetic experience, achievement of a person’s goals, or positive feedback
from others. It is independent of activity, leisure or social acceptance.” –
David Gray and D. Pelegrino (1973) Reflections on the Park and Recreation
Movement. Dubuque, Iowa, Willian C. Brown, p. 7. R.

3. Based from the definitions given in number 1 and 2, what is your ideas
about Community Recreation? Explain in one paragraph with 6 to statements.
Community is a group of people living in a certain geographic area who
shares and understand each other’s interest, culture, belief and has a since
of common membership and belongingness. While recreation on the other
hand, from its word alone “re-create” meaning you do something (activity) to
entertain yourself during your free time which will relax your body soul.
Putting the two words together will give us a very productive meaning. So
Community Recreation is a program in a society which includes activities like
sport, fitness, aquatics, personal development program, rehabilitation
program, and even government initiative programs. These programs is usually
implemented by the Barangay Council and is supported by the people living
in the community. The main goal of Community Recreation is to provide
opportunities for the resident of all ages to participate based on their skill,
interest, and abilities. It also help the community to live harmoniously.

a. Barangay Organizational Chart (Describe the Chart).
The structure of organizational chart described as functional each

part of the team with an overall mission and to act as one. While
each has a specific set of duties to be more efficient and effective
in working as team.
b. Annual Activities like fiesta, sports, and other significant
occasions.
Say something about the acts.
It is a part of the Barangay Development Plan as required by the
law to carry out programs which will address some problems and to
stimulate the development of the community.
c. Budget allocations and its priorities in the community.
The Barangay Captain, with the assistance of the Barangay
Treasurer, prepares the barangay budget for different
activities with corresponding project cost necessary for fund
flows with the reasonable release of funds.

something in this.
The priority program of Barangay Council in time of pandemic
is focus on the different health services provided for the
people of the community as well as the giving groceries

Basketball competition has been a tradition and a highlight in every

Zambowood is not just a court for playing Basketball, it is a multi-

Fiesta competition like Search for Mr. and Ms. Zambowood. It is
also located along the road, so you will not be having a hard time

our Barangay which make the people living there active in sport,

-Gymnasium is a place usually contains special equipment where people
go to do physical exercise and get fit. It is a place where obese and
severely wasted individual meet and improve their body. In this time of
pandemic, it is very important to stay healthy and physically fit. One
way to achieve that is to eat a well-balanced food and exercise daily.
But since, most of the gym is located in the city proper, a lot of people
find it hard to keep their body physically fit. Good thing in our
community, we have a walk-in gym where we can enjoy doing exercise.
And having a gym in the Barangay allow us to find a sense of belonging.
It is sometime the one that support us when having a difficult moments-
in and out of the gym help inject a sense of fun on our day and remind
us of something essential: We’re all in this together. So worry no more
and start exercising! A workout a day keeps CoVID virus away.
-Billiard also known as cue sports are a wide variety of games of skill generally played with
a cue stick, which is used to strike billiard balls and thereby cause them to move around a
cloth-covered billiards table bounded by elastic bumpers known as cushion. And among
the many sports in which the Philippines has competed internationally, this sport has
arguably given the country with most success. Due to various Filipinos’ triumphant
history on the sport, the Philippines has earned its title as the Pool Capital of the World.
Billiard is one of the many forms of relaxation found in our community which a lot of
people are enjoy doing. They usually spend most of their leisure time playing billiards and
sometimes this sport serves as their bonding moment. It also helps improve brain
function and the spirit of socialization. If there is one good thing billiard gives in our
barangay, it is the fact that it connects the people there. It tightens the bond, though
sometimes misunderstanding occur while playing the game. But you can’t deny that the
spirit of sportsmanship exist in the game. This recreational activity makes the people
enjoy life even in the midst of pandemic.

Take 5 Areas or sites for
improvement in your community.
- A barangay hall is the seat of local government for the barangay, the lowest
elected administrative division of the Philippines, below that of a Philippine
city/municipality. The barangay captain, the head of the barangay government, will
often hold office there. The elected barangay council, the Sangguniang Barangay,
will also hold its meetings there. The barangay hall also serves as a local community
center often providing space for both permanent and temporary services and events.
The barangay's day care center and office space for the tanods and the barangay
health workers are often located there. Medical missions, religious services, fiestas,
and sports contests are often held at or next to the barangay hall. Like many recent
government buildings in the Philippines they usually have concrete block walls,
galvanized iron roofs, and tiled floors. It is important because it serves as the office
of the barangay captain and meeting place for the Sangguniang Barangay. The
barangay hall also serves as a local community center, often providing space for
both permanent and temporary services and events in the community.
- Roads make a crucial contribution to economic development,
growth and bring important social benefits. It is important in
order to make the community grow and develop. Today, the
community has grown leaps and bounds with the inhabitants
devoting to some worthwhile endeavors- such as farming and
cottage industries. The residents share common experiences and
move in unity of purpose. Their welfare can be served better if
their potentials for good and effective community leadership will
be harnessed, and if given this opportunity to govern by and for
themselves, the growth and development of their community will
be fast. The community is very promising for industrial growth,
development and expansion. The grant of separate and distinct
political identity to this Barangay is well to the pragmatic
approach of the City Government towards the countryside
development. Delivery of basic social services in the fields of
health, housing, education and even on sports, among others will
surely be realized with dispatch because the area is very much
suitable for the purpose. In addition, providing access to
employment, social, health and education services makes
a road network crucial in fighting against poverty.
- Zambowood is one of the 98 barangays in Zamboanga City that is
progressing. Progressing in a sense that there are a lot of
establishments born in the community, from gym to resort and even
restaurants. In fact, in can be compared to the city proper because
there are a lot of people visiting the place. But despite of that
positive traits of the barangay, something is still missing. A place
where kids and family can have their quality time. A place like a park
where in it is an area of natural, semi-natural or planted space set
aside for human enjoyment and recreation or for the protection of
wildlife or natural habitats. If the community will build a park, it will
surely invite more people to visit the place. And there will be a lot of
recreational activities that can be done in the park.
- It is not a new that Zamboanga is experiencing a rotational back out
system, and this gives burden to the people living in the City.
Rotational black out, unannounced black out and likes. The street
lights in Zambowood are also affected by the black out and because
of this, a lot of riders are having a hard time driving. And some got
into accident. I believe that mayor Beng has project to put a solar
street light in some areas in the City. And I hope that our Barangay
will be chosen to be one of the beneficiaries for the said project
because some of the lights in our Barangay are not functioning. It will
be better if the solar street light will be place in all of the zone in our
community. If this project will be realize, the city’s budget for paying
the electricity for street lights will be lessen. And the budget use for
street lights can be used to help the city improve.
-Health is wealth! A very old saying but still very important to
everyone. In this time of pandemic, we should always take care
of ourselves and always visit our doctor regularly. But, how
about those poor people? Where and how can they monitor
their health? One of the program in every barangay is to have a
health center. A place where that aims to keep individuals and
families in better health by taking into account their
environment and social condition. It provide services regardless
of patients’ ability to pay and charge for services on a sliding
fee scale. Our barangay has a small health center which makes
it difficult to cater all the needs of the people living in the
community. I hope that the barangay officials will expand the
health center so that the people will not stay along the road
and to prevent accident from happening.
Thank you!!!
