 Objectives of this class


Recall and revise modal verbs in English and their position and function in the
sentence.
Express obligation and permission by using appropriately the modals in their
own situations.
Realization
Since at the beginning of this class students are going to be presented with
modals : their types ,forms and usages .
Modal verbs are a very essential and important grammatical structure in
English language. They are used to express ability, necessity , obligation
prohibition etc.
Grammar : Modal verbs for obligation and permission

 As far as the form of modals is concerned you have to know that :


Modal verbs do not take “es/s /d ed” at the same time they do not
take an “ing “ form .
In this unit we are going to focus on the modal verbs that are
used to express :
 Obligation : “Must ,have to “ are used to express necessity.
(Detyrim per dicka ) e.x I must talk to her right now.
 Necessity( Domosdoshmeri) : e.x My brother has to wear a suit to work.
 Lack of obligation : “don’t have to “
 Lack of necessity : “don’t need to /needn’t”

 After this short presentation students have to focus their attention on the
exercises that are given on page 78 on modals .
In exercise 1 they have to look at the saying and discuss about what it means.
e.x It is not necessary for you to work there ( don’t have to )
Meanwhile the other exercises are focused on the correct choice of the modals
that are given in each paragraph .
e.x He can/can’t eat at his desk.
Grammar
focus section is focused on a further reinforcement of the modals used in the
exercises above.
In exercise 5 page 78 students have to complete the sentences with “
mustn’t /needn’t “ where necessary . e.x You needn’t rush /You mustn’t rush
etc.
Speaking : Asking for and giving advice

 Objectives of this class


Identify words and expressions that are used to give advice about jobs and
professions in general.
Use accordingly these expressions especially when you have to solve a problem.
Realization
In difference from the previous class that puts emphasis on the grammatical
structure of modals now we are going to deal with the improvement of the
speaking abilities of : Asking for and giving advice in a certain situation.
We are going to read UK Today section and try to explain what does a job
experience means to us :
e.x A certain period of time spent after graduating in a certain job position
Speaking : Asking for and giving advice

 In the speaking focus section there are given some expressions that are
used to :
 Asking for advice : e.x What do you think I should do ?
 Giving advice : e.x You should../I think you should …
 Accepting advice : e.x Thanks,that’s really helpful
 Rejecting advice : e.x I’m not sure that’s a good idea.
