MUSIC
Is the art of combining and regulating
sounds of varying pitch to produce
melodious harmony expressive of various
ideas and emotions
ART APPRECIATION
MUSIC
SOUND – begins with the vibrations of an
object

ART APPRECIATION
MUSIC
PITCH
it is the highness or lowness we hear
in a sound. Most men speak or sing in a
lower range than women. Without pitch, it
would be boring or no music at all.
ART APPRECIATION
MUSIC
ART APPRECIATION
MUSIC
PITCH
the pitch of sound is decided by the
frequency of its vibrations. The faster the
vibration, the higher the pitch
Vibration frequency is measured in cycles
per second
ART APPRECIATION
MUSIC
PITCH
in general, the smaller the vibrating
object is, the faster the vibration and the
higher the pitch. The width, thickness,
density and tension of the vibrating body
also affect the outcome.
ART APPRECIATION
MUSIC
PITCH
Decibel (dB) Sound Pressure Level (SPL)
unit of measurement used to express the
ratio of one value of a physical property to
another on logarithmic scale.
ART APPRECIATION
MUSIC
DECIBEL SPL
normal hearing human level is 60 dB.
(0 dB – 140 dB)

DYNAMICS
degrees of loudness or softness in
music are called dynamics. Loudness is
related to the amplitude of the vibration
that produces the sound.
ART APPRECIATION
MUSIC
ART APPRECIATION

DYNAMICS
it somehow shows the inspirations of
the performers feeling about it. In musical
notes composers Italian words and
abbreviations to indicate dynamics

TONE COLOR / TIMBRE
the quality of sound that distinguishes
them is called TIMBRE. Changes in tone
color creates a contrast, when the same
melody is played by two or more other
instruments, it creates different effects
ART APPRECIATION
MUSIC
DURATION
the property of sound depends on the
length of time over which vibration is
maintained.
ART APPRECIATION
MEDIUM IN MUSIC
Vocal Medium
the most widespread and familiar way of
making music. The song projected by
human voice is the most form of music.
ART APPRECIATION
MEDIUM IN MUSIC
Vocal Medium
the voice’s unique ability to fuse a word with a
musical tone is the reason that poetry and singing
have been inseparable in many cultures. Singing
can make words easier to remember and heighten
emotional effect
ART APPRECIATION
MEDIUM IN MUSIC
Vocal Medium
singing demands a greater supply and control of
breath. Air from the lungs in controlled by the
lower abdominal muscles and the diaphragm. The
air makes the vocal cords vibrate. Lungs, throat,
mouth and nose produces the desired sound.

than voice that produces musical sound.
