We all can be victim of drowsiness while driving, simply after too short night sleep,
tired physical condition or during long journeys.
• A large number of injuries and deaths occur due to fatigue related road accidents.
• Gridlock is one of the most serious current crises in any major city on the planet.
• Previously, Infrared Light Sensors, have been proposed to obtain traffic dates that had
anything sensible with terrible tests.
• Several issues may occur with this approach, one of the issues is due to traffic congestion.
• It collects traffic data, checks the number of vehicles; but, counting the number of
vehicles may give false results if the intra vehicular isolating is close to zero (two vehicles
almost touching may be considered as one) and it may not count truck or auto-truck as
vehicles, which are typical traffic techniques, especially in South-Asian countries.
DISADVANTAGES :
1. Difficult to detect.
2. Less Accuracy.
3. Most of the existing systems use external factors and inform user
about problem and save user after accident is accord but from
research most of the accidents are due to faults in user like
drowsiness, sleeping while driving.
PROBLEM STATEMENT :
• Driver’s inattention might be the result of a lack of alertness when driving due to driver
drowsiness and distraction.
• Driver distraction occurs when an object or event draws a person’s attention away from the
driving task.
• Unlike driver distraction, driver drowsiness involves no triggering event but, instead, is
characterized by a progressive withdrawal of attention from the road and traffic demands.
• Both driver drowsiness and distraction, however, might have the same effects, that is decreased
driving performance, longer reaction time, and an increased risk of crash involvement.
PROPOSED SYSTEM :
• In this paper, a low cost, real time driver drowsiness monitoring system has been
proposed based on visual behavior and machine learning.
• Here, visual behavior features like Eye Aspect Ratio, Mouth Opening Ratio and
Nose Length Ratio are computed from the streaming video, captured by a webcam.
• The developed system works accurately with the generated synthetic data. In this
OpenCV based Machine Learning techniques are used for automatic detection of
drowsiness. Subsequently, the feature values are stored and Machine Learning
Algorithms are used for classification.
ADVANTAGES :
3. As the system is automated it doesn’t require more resources like hand written
record of driver’s safety, but the record is maintained in the database.
4. Practically applicable.
HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS :
● Hard Disk - 20 GB
● Monitor - SVGA
SYSTEM REQUIREMENT SPECIFICATIONS:
SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS :
• The ultimate goal of the system is to check the drowsiness condition of the driver.
• Currently available driver drowsiness detection systems usually fall into two categories:
(i) very expensive systems, limited to specific high-end car models; and
(ii)affordable solutions that lack robustness.
• Our work is focused on implementing a drowsiness detection system that tries to bridge the gap
between them by balancing affordability and availability with functionality.
