Marcos Era - Death of Ninoy Aquino: Science, Technology and Society

During the Marcos era in the Philippines, the government contributed to science and technology in several key ways: 1) It sent scientists abroad to study nuclear science and provided nuclear energy training to hundreds of professionals. 2) The country developed its own missiles called Bong-Bong 1 and 2 and conducted over 30 test launches. 3) It attempted to build its only nuclear power plant, the unfinished Bataan Nuclear Power Plant, but it was mothballed due to safety concerns. 4) Several important inventions originated in the Philippines during this time period, including the first karaoke machine and the first single-chip GUI and 10-Mbit Ethernet CMOS chip.

What did Marcos contribute in
science and technology?
Marcos assisted 107 institutions in undertaking
nuclear energy work by sending scientists to study
nuclear science and technology abroad and providing
basic training to 482 scientists, doctors, engineers, and
technicians.
Local Inventions
Philippine-made missiles during the Marcos era
- Missile developed by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) during
the Marcos era - is the project continued to the present? During Marcos
era Philippines is capable of developing its own missile, called project
Bong-Bong1 and Bong-Bong 2. Based on the results of the tests
conducted, the optimum preheat sequence time was found to be 20
seconds. The fuse detonation performance was 100% for all the dynamic
tests of the development phase. All the problems and difficulties
previously encountered during the experimental phase have been
eliminated. With regards to the establishment of a firing table for the
weapon system. Since December 1972, a series of 37 dynamic tests were
conducted on the 180MM rocket. All the tests were performed at Caballo
Island except for four firings which were conducted in Fort Magsaysay.

Philippine-made missiles during the Marcos era
- Several reports surfaced (some may be viewed as sarcastic)
that after the successful EDSA People Power Revolution
that ousted dictator Marcos, some of the defense programs
have reformed and others are canceled. But there's a
program that has been continued with the help of the US, the
Santa Barbara Project. In the Marcos era, there are some
tests that have been made. With US help, the Philippines
developed a ballistic missile.
Local Inventions
Bataan Nuclear Power Plant
- The Bataan Nuclear Power Plant is a nuclear
power plant, completed but never fueled, on the
Bataan Peninsula, 100 kilometers (62 mi) west of
Manila, Philippines. It is located on a 3.57 km2
(1.38 sq mi) government reservation at Napot Point
in Morong, Bataan. It was the Philippines' only
attempt at building a nuclear power plant. It was
mothballed due to safety concerns in the wake of
the Chernobyl disaster in Ukraine in 1986 and
issues regarding corruption.
Local Inventions
Bataan Nuclear Power Plant
- The Philippine nuclear program started in 1958 with the creation of the Philippine Atomic
Energy Commission (PAEC) under Republic Act 2067. Under a regime of martial law,
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos in July 1973 announced the decision to build a nuclear
power plant. A presidential committee was set up to secure funding for two 620 megawatt
nuclear reactors for the energy needs of Luzon. This was in response to the 1973 oil crisis, as
the Middle East oil embargo had put a heavy strain on the Philippine economy, and Marcos
believed nuclear power to be the solution to meeting the country's energy demands and
decreasing dependence on imported oil.
Local Inventions
Karaoke
Roberto del Rosario invented his version of the karaoke
machine between 1975 and 1977, and in his patents (UM-
5269 on June 2, 1983, and UM-6237 on November 14,
1986) he described his sing-along system as a handy, multi-
purpose, compact machine that incorporates an amplifier
speaker, one or two tape mechanisms, an optional tuner or
radio, and a microphone mixer with features to enhance
one's voice, such as the echo or reverb to simulate an opera
hall or a studio sound. The whole system was enclosed in
one cabinet casing.
Local Inventions
Water-powerd car
- Daniel Dingel started working on a water-
powered car and prototype in 1969. His
hydrogen reactor uses electricity from a 12-volt
car battery to transform ordinary tap water into
deuterium oxide or heavy water

- Dingel's car has never been patented and

commercialized because of what he suspects as
an anti-Dingel car conspiracy by multinational
oil companies
Local Inventions
First single-chip GUI
In 1972, the first single-chip graphical user interface
accelerator that made computers work a lot faster was
invented by Diosdado “Dado” Banatao.

Banatao is credited for devising a more efficient way to link

computers, by simplifying the computer design with fewer
chips, which has made computers smaller, more portable,
and more affordable.
Local Inventions
First 10-Mbit Ethernet CMOS
In 1981, he designed his second invention, which is the first
10-Mbit Ethernet CMOS with silicon coupler data-link
control and transceiver chip under the company SEEQ
Technology.
