Function and Relation: Gen Math Lesson 1

This document discusses functions and relations. It defines a relation as a set of ordered pairs where the domain is the set of first coordinates and the range is the set of second coordinates. A function is defined as a relation where each element of the domain corresponds to exactly one element in the range. The key characteristics of a function are: (1) each domain element matches to only one range element, (2) some range elements may not be matched to domain elements, and (3) multiple domain elements can match to the same range element. Functions can be represented as ordered pairs, tables, graphs, mappings, or equations. The vertical line test determines if a graph is a function.

FUNCTION and

RELATION
GEN MATH LESSON 1
At the end of the lesson the student must
be able to:

DifferentiateFunctions and Relations

Represent real-life situations using functions,
including piece-wise function
Evaluate function
Solve problems involving functions
Relation
 Relation is a set of ordered pairs. The domain is the set of first coordinates and
the range is the set of second coordinates

Ex. { (1,2) , (3,4) , (5,6)}

The domain or X is the set of first coordinates which 1, 3 , 5
the range or Y is the set of second coordinates which is 2, 4 , 6
Function
 Function is a relation in which each element of the domain corresponds exactly one element of
the range.

**note** the members of the domain can be called inputs and the members of the range ca be called
outputs.
A. Characteristics of a function
Each element in domain X must be matched with exactly
one element in range Y.

Explanation. No domain can have 2 different range. It must be exactly one element in
range Y.
Some elements in Y may not be matched with any element in X.

So, range could not be selected or matched with

domain. But a domain x should always have a partner in
in range y.
Two or more elements in X may be matched with the same element in Y.

so, domain can be matched with the same element in

range y. but no domain x can be matched with two or
more elements in range y.

**note**all functions are relations but not all relations are

functions.
Characteristics of a function
Each element in domain X must be matched
with exactly one element in range Y.
Some elements in Y may not be matched
with any element in X.
Two or more elements in X may be
matched with the same element in Y.
Ways of Writing a function

Ordered Pairs
Table of values
Graph
Mapping diagram
Equation
The equation always starts with y.

 The notation can be read as f of x (means function of
x) is equal to…

 Therefore y = f(X) but in two different ways of

writing. If it is an equation then use y, if it is notation
use f(x).
Test of Function
By following the characteristics, in ordered pair, table of values, and mapping diagram
simply look at the domain or the x – coordinate, if no domain is repeated then it is a
function, but if the domain can be seen twice or more then it is not a function.

2nd picture is not function, as you look in the

domain 5, you can see that it has 2 ranges
(4,7). It violates the first characteristics of
function.
Test of function
Tables

Look at the 2nd table, so it is not a function because of the domain(x) 4 have to range(y)
4, -2 , same with the domain(x) 2 that has 2,-2 as its range.
Test of function
Graph
For a Graph, we use the vertical line test. When you see a graph and imagine of
drawing vertical lines (ung nakatayo) all over the graph and there is only one
intersection (point kung saan sila nag touch) with the graph then it is a function.

Picture 1 Function Picture 2 not function

Let’s ask each other.
How do you see the statement that all functions
are relation but not all relations are function?

Give a situation or an example that proves all

functions are relation but not all relations are
function.
ASK YOURSELF!
As students, do you think
that all relations is a
function? Why or why not?
Generalization.
For a relation to be a function it should follow one of these
characteristics:

Each element in domain X must be matched with exactly one

element in range Y.
Some elements in Y may not be matched with any element in X.
Two or more elements in X may be matched with the same
element in Y.
EXTEND IT..
All functions are relation because if there is
no significant relationship between two
things then it wont work out as it used to be
but not all relation is a function meaning
there are kind of relationship that should not
have a relationship because it will disregard
its function.
