Introduction
•Cone penetrometer testing (CPT) is a fast, effective, and relatively
inexpensive system for collecting important soils parameters during a
geotechnical site investigation.
•Testing equipment consists of a cone on the end of a series of rods that are
pushed hydraulically into the ground. The typical rate of penetration is (1
in/s).
•It monitors :
point load or tip resistance (qc)
friction resistance (fs )
porewater pressure (u)
Introduction
•IT used for particularly for soft clays, soft silts, and in fine to medium sand
deposits. The test is not well adapted to gravel deposits or to stiff/hard
cohesive deposits.
It passed many phases by time:
Mechanical—the earliest type.
Electric friction—first modification using strain gauges to measure qc (point
resistance) and fs (side friction). (CPT)
Electric piezo is a modification to measuring the pore water pressure.
Seismic cone is a further modification to compute the shear. (CPTu)
wave velocity and compute dynamic shear modulus. (SCPTu)
Advantages & Disadvantages
Advantages
Provides fast and continuous profiling
Equipment is economical and productive
Generates repeatable and reliable data that are not dependent on the operator
Can identify thin horizons of low strength
Advantages & Disadvantages
Disadvantages
Skilled operators are required
No drill cuttings or soil samples are produced
Limited penetration in gravels or cemented materials
Data are unreliable in unsaturated conditions, particularly in clayey soils
Correlations
qc = Qc / Ac
qt = qc + u2 * (1-a)
fs = Fs / As
Rf = (fs / qt) *100
Δu= u2 – u0
Bq= Δu / qn
qn = qt – бv
Qt = (qt – бv) / б’v
Soil Parameters
γ/ γw = 0.27 (log Rf) + 0.36 (log (qt/pa) +1.236
Rf: friction ratio (fs/qt)
Tan Ф’ = 1/2.68 ( log(qc/б’ v) +0.29 )
Su = (qt – бv) / Nkt
Nkt from (10 to 18)
St = (qt – бv ) / (Nkt * fs)
OCR = 0.25 (Qt) ^ 1.25
