3 Amplifier Performance Parameters and Classification

1. The document defines performance parameters for amplifiers such as voltage gain, current gain, power gain, input resistance, output resistance, and bandwidth. 2. Amplifiers can be classified based on their output type, frequency range of the input signal, position of the operating point, coupling type, and application. 3. Key amplifier characteristics include gain expressed in decibels, infinite input resistance and zero output resistance, and frequency response defined by cutoff frequencies at the -3dB points.

AMPLIFIER
 LOs-

1. DEFINE PERFORMANCE PARAMETERS

OF AMPLIFIER
2. CLASSIFY AMPLIFIER

Outline
 Pre-requisite
 Amplifier characteristics
 Classification of amplifier

AEL/APhir 3
Amplifier characteristics
 Voltage Gain ,Current gain and Power Gain

The gain of an amplifier is the ratio of output quantity to the input

quantity.
• Current gain (AI) = Io/Ii
• Voltage gain (AV) = Vo/Vi
• Power Gain (AP) = Po/Pi

 Always expressed in decibels(dB)

• Gain in dB = 20log10(Vo/Vi)
• Gain: Infinite(∞)
• Power Gain in dB = 10 log10(Vo/Vi)

AEL/APhir 4
Amplifier characteristics
 Voltage Gain ,Current gain and Power
Gain
 The gain of an amplifier has logarithmic
unit as human ear response is
logarithmic.

AEL/APhir 5
Example
 Example  Find the gain in db in the following cases :
 (i) Voltage gain of 30 (ii) Power gain of 100

 Solution. (i) Voltage gain = 20 log ( 30 ) = 29.54 db

10
 (ii) Power gain = 10 log (100 db) = 20 db

Amplifier characteristics
 Input Resistance
• It is the equivalent resistance seen looking into the input
terminals of an amplifier with output terminals are short
circuited.
• Ri: Infinite (∞)

 Output Resistance
• It is the equivalent resistance seen looking into the output
terminals of an amplifier. with input terminals are short
circuited.
• Ro: Zero (0)

AEL/APhir 7
Amplifier Frequency response
 The relationship between gain and
frequency is defined by a curve, that is
called as frequency response .

AEL/APhir 8
Amplifier Frequency Response

AEL/APhir 9
Amplifier characteristics
 Bandwidth:

• Range of frequencies over which gain of amplifier is

constant or

• Range of frequencies over which gain of amplifier is

satisfactory

• B.W: Infinite (∞)/Large

AEL/APhir 10
Amplifier characteristics
 Bandwidth:
• Difference between Higher cut off frequency(fH) and
lower cut off frequency(fL)

• B.W=fH – fL
 These -3dB corner frequency points define the
frequency at which the output gain is reduced to
70.71% of its maximum value.
 Then we can correctly say that the -3dB point is also

the frequency at which the systems gain has reduced to

0.707 of its maximum value.
 Frequency Response -3dB Point
