NATO's Global Strategies & Alliances

NATO has been patrolling the Mediterranean since 2001 in response to 9/11 to monitor terrorist activity. This mission guarantees merchant ship safety and conducts rescues. NATO partners with non-EU countries through programs like Partnership for Peace to build trust. Turkey is an important NATO member, but concerns arose when it planned to cooperate militarily with Russia in 2009 due to sharing NATO equipment. While tensions have stabilized, Turkey remains a key financial backer of NATO. One of Georgia's top foreign policy goals is to join NATO, with relations beginning in 1992 and Georgia becoming an official aspirant in 2006.

Active endeavor
• Operation NATO Navy has been patrolling the Mediterranean since October 2001 as part
of an active effort. For the firs time in NATO history after the tragedy of September 11,
2001, the fifth clause of the Washington Treaty entered into force, stating that an attack on
one of the members of NATO is the most serious attack. That is why the Alliance decided
to coordinate in the Mediterranean area and expose a person suspected of terrorist plans.
• This mission also had other significant advantages, including guaranteeing the safety of
merchant ships ( and not only ), as NATO ships accompanied them. Alliance ships and
helicopters also conducted a number of rescue operations in the Mediterranean including
the evacuation of crew from damaged ships. Not only NATO members but also its partner
countries are involved in operations in the Mediterranean.
Programs of NATO
• Partnership for Peace the PFP aims to build trust and peace between the Alliance and its non-
EU countries, as well as the former Soviet Union.
• The Defense Development Program DEEP aims to develop the Georgian defense sector in
various areas.
• The Professional Development Program (PDP) is aimed at the professional development of
individuals employed in the security sector, Transparency and Integrity initiative (Building
Integrity (BI) Initiative).
• The Science for Peace and Security (SPS) aims to co-operate in the field of civil science and
innovation between NATO members and its Partner countries in line with NATOs strategic
objectives.
NATOs attitude towards Russia-Turkey union
• In August 2009, the presidents of Russia and Turkey announced plans to deepen cooperation
that would go beyond economic and trade ties and grow into the sale of military equipment.
• Turkey also owns the equipment used by NATO, so the US considered it inadmissible to
deploy Turkish military missile planes and NATO equipment together with Russia, as is was
likely thar Russia would be able to obtain information on their aircraft system.
• Because of all of this, in 2019, President Trump announced that he would no longer sell the
above equipment to Turkey, to which Turkey was also outraged, as it had already paid a
large sum of money. Nevertheless, the situation is now stable and Turkey remains one of the
most important members of NATO, as the Alliance has one of the largest financial backers
in the form of Turkey.
NATO and Georgia
• One of the main priorities of Georgias foreign and security policy is to join the North Atlantic
Treaty Organization.
• NATO-Georgia relations date back to 1992, when Georgia joined Atlantic Cooperation Council.
• At the NATO Prague Summit in 2002, Georgia made an official announcement regarding the
country is membership in the Alliance, therefore, the process of Georgia is integration into NATO
begins from this time.
• Georgia is an aspirant country of the Alliance after the informal meeting of NATO foreign
ministers in New York on September 21, 2006.
• Particularly important in NATO-Georgia relations is the unequivocal political support expressed by
the military aggression by the Russia Federation against Georgia in August 2008.
