SELF

DEVELOPMENT
What is self development ?

Self development covers activities

that improve awareness and identity, develop talents and
potential, build  human capital and
facilitate employability, enhance the quality of life and
contribute to the realization of dreams and aspirations.
MAJOR THREE
ELEMENTS FOR SELF
DEVELOPMENT:
Attitude:
Attitude is the start and end point of
all self development work . Without
the right positive attitude of self
belief , you will not achieve
anything of importance in your life.
Ability:
You’ll have a tough time
achieving your full potential in
life if you to do something you
have no gift for . It is much easier
to take time to find out your own
unique gift and develop these.
Faith:
The one thing that distinguishes
those who realize their full potential
and those that don’t is self belief. In
fact, the strength of your self belief is
the one thing that determines whether
you conquer mountain or conquer
foothills.
Types of self development:

Human skill
Technical skill
Conceptual skill
Human skills:
Humans kills are also called Interpersonal skills. It is an
ability to work with people. It helps the managers to
understand, communicate and work with others. It also helps
the managers to lead, motivate and develop team spirit.
Human relations skills are required by all managers at all
levels of management. This is so, since all managers have to
interact and work with people.
Four Most Essential Human
Skills in Today’s Workplace:

Adaptability: This is probably the most important skill

someone can have in and out of the workplace. Working
with people whom you might not have similar interests can
be a difficult tasks. Being able to adapt to any situation will
not only allow you to be a better co-worker, but will help
you fit into the company culture which helps you be more
successful and productive then those hired simply because
they fit a job description
Interpersonal Skills:

Being able to get along with everyone in the

workplace and interactive with them on a daily basis is
another top ranked human skill. Being able to form
relationships with co-workers creates better cohesion and team
dynamics. Having characteristics like empathy,
cooperativeness, respect, and show significance in
relationships is one of the major things employers look for
when hiring. All of these are forms of interpersonal skills that
are necessary for day-to-day operations to work smoothly and
efficiently.
Communication:

Communication is essential for effective functioning in

every part of an organization. There are multiple forms of
communication that go on daily in an organization and being able to
use each properly is critical. Some things can be addressed via
email, some in person, and others over the phone. Learning the
proper way to communicate will create a dynamic work
environment that will stand the test of time. Breakdown in
communication is bound to happen, but it’s how you act and resolve
the issue.
Learning:

Most people don’t understand that the ability to learn is a

fantastic human skill to have. The ability to learn quickly and
efficiently is something that most people would kill for. Some people
pick up new material a lot faster then others and being able to learn is
just as important in today’s workplace as everything is changing.
Technology is outdated every month, if not sooner, so being able to
learn new processes or ways of doing things is important in a
competitive workplace.
Technical skill:
A technical skill is the ability to perform the given job. Technical
skills help the managers to use different machines and tools. It also
helps them to use various procedures and techniques. The low-
level manager require more technical skills. This is because they
are inch rage of the actual operations.
Apart from Prof. Robert Katz's three managerial skills, a manager
also needs (requires) following additional managerial skills.
Important technical skill:
Office Skills – While it may seem obvious in our current
technology-driven world, it's essential for managers to have basic
proficiency with office software like Microsoft Office, Adobe,
Google Docs, and any relevant industry-specific programs
Technical Writing :

Managers may have to communicate goals and instructions

to employees, create training materials, document important
processes, generate product and service descriptions and relay
department and project statuses to upper management. All of this
requires clear and concise professional writing skills.
Computer and Digital Literacy
While not all jobs require management to have a
working knowledge of programming or website maintenance, it's good
to know some of the basics. This could include a general understanding
of web design and SEO, or it could involve training in HTML and CSS.
Conceptual skill:
Conceptual skill is the ability to visualize (see) the organization as a whole. It
includes Analytical, Creative and Initiative skills. It helps the manager to identify
the causes of the problems and not the symptoms. It helps him to solve the
problems for the benefit of the entire organization. It helps the manager to fix
goals for the whole organization and to plan for every situation. According to Prof.
Robert Katz, conceptual skills are mostly required by the top-level management
because they spend more time in planning, organizing and problem solving.
Top three Conceptual Skills

Analysis:

A very important conceptual skill is the ability to analyze and

evaluate whether or not a company is achieving its goals and
sticking to its business plan. Managers have to look at how all the
departments are working together, spot any particular issues, and
then decide what steps need to be taken.
Leadership:
Someone with conceptual skills also has strong leadership skills.
She needs to convince employees and employers to follow her
vision for the company. She needs to inspire others to trust and
follow her, and that takes strong leadership.
Creative Thinking:
People with conceptual skills must be very creative . They have to be able
to devise creative solutions to abstract problems.
It involves thinking “outside of the box” — they must consider how all
the departments within an organization work together, and how they can
work to solve a particular problem.
• Everyone thinks of changing the world,
• But no one thinks of changing himself/herself
