Clothing Selection, Purchase and Care
Why and How Clothing
Choices are made.
Learning Outcome
Objectives:
At the end of discussion, you will be able to:
Identify the different reasons why we wear clothes
Explain the four theories of dress behavior of people
Assess the factors affecting choices of clothing.
Why we wear
clothing?
1. ADORNMENT - Added decoration or ornamentation.
2. PROTECTION - Clothing that provides physical safeguards to the body,
preventing harm from climate and environment.
3. IDENTIFICATION - Establishing who someone is or what they do.
4. MODESTY - Covering the body according to the code of decency established by
society.
5. STATUS - One's position or rank in comparison to others.
Many theories have attempted to explain the basic
motivations for human beings to cover the body.
Modesty, protection and adornment are three such
theories behind the wearing of clothes. There is
however some disagreement among various theorists
as to which is the most important. A study of
motivations in clothing could help one understand the
dress behavior of people. Ryan (1966) and Kefgen et
al (1986) observed these four theories.
1. The first theory was the biblical one of modesty, that is clothes were
worn to cover nakedness and because of shame. However this theory has
been disputed on the grounds that modesty is not the same in different
cultures.
2. The second theory to explain the origin of clothes is the
opposite of the first theory. According to this theory, clothing was
first worn to call attention to the parts of the body covered.
3. A third theory states that man first wore clothes as protection
against the elements of insects, beasts and enemies or against
harm or supernatural forces.
4. The fourth and final theory of the origin of clothing is that it
was one means of aesthetic expression. This theory has been
called the decoration or ornamentation theory.
Why We Wear
What We Wear
We display ourselves by clothing choices. Whether dressed for
insulation, group affiliation, mood, favorite activity, special
occasion, we show the world who we are by our garments. We
look at strangers and form immediate concepts of them by their
manner of dress.
THINGS THAT AFFECT THE CLOTHING
CHOICES THAT YOU MAKE
1. External Factors- those outside you/about your context.
2. Internal Factors- those inside you/about you
- these are the things that are personal to you
