What are Lightning
Arresters?
Lightning Arresters are a device used to
protect from lightning strikes. These are known
as Lightning Arresters. An electric shock is
nothing but a temporary increase in voltage, arc,
spark, and surge current caused by electricity.

Construction of Lighting Arrester
This arrester consists of a spark gap in series
with a nonlinear resistor which provides high
resistance to normal voltage and low resistance for
surge voltage.
The length of the gap is set that the normal line
voltage is not sufficient to cause the break down
of air between the gap and to form an arc. But
high surge voltage will break down the air
insulation and form an arc between the gap and
series-connected nonlinear resistor offer low
resistance to high surge voltage.
Operating Principle of
Lighting Arrester
The principle is that once the voltage
surge travels across the conductor and
reaches the place where it is to be installed.
So it will break the insulation of the
conductor for a moment so that the voltage
surge can be discharged towards the
ground.
Once the system is less than the
voltage, the insulation will be re-
established between the ground and the
conductor. The current flowing towards the
ground is turned off.
