Energy Systems in Physical Education

This document discusses the three main energy systems: the creatine phosphate system which provides instant energy for bursts of activity lasting 5-8 seconds; the lactic acid system which provides short term energy for 10 seconds of hard work but results in lactic acid buildup; and an oxygen debt system where extra oxygen is needed after activity to remove lactic acid and replenish energy stores.

Energy in Action

Creatine Phosphate System

• This is our immediate energy system

• It provides instant energy when we need it
• How ever it only last a short time
• Muscular contractions rely on high energy compound called adenosine
triphosphate (atp)
• It is stored in your muscles for instant usage however it only lasts 5-8 seconds
of hard work
• We ca n remake atp as fast as we use it up, this is done by the use of a
chemical called creatine phosphate
• This is stored in our muscles in small amounts
• This system is very important when we need bursts of explosive
speeds
• Many players in sports need to develop this energy system
• After the burst of activity we need to rest to allow our bodies to
refill the creatine phosphate stores

Lactic Acid System

• The lactic acid system gives us short term energy

• After about 10 seconds of hard work the supplies of atp and creatine
phosphate in our muscles are used up
• This causes us to breathe quickly and deeply
• This is done to supply the muscles with oxygen so that it can remake
atp
• However it takes a while for the oxygen to reach our muscles
• The in mean time the lactic acid system uses GLYCOGEN to remake
atp
• We produce glycogen from the breakdown of carbohydrates on our
food and store it in our muscles and liver
• However if there is not enough oxygen in our system lactic acid as
well as atp is created
• The lactic acid build up in the muscles which causes contractions
which are pain full ( cramps) and we become tired
• Therefore we cannot use the lactic acid system for long periods
Oxygen Debt

• When we use the creatine phosphate system and lactic acid system we
produce an oxygen debt, this means our muscles need oxygen and there
not enough at that time
• We continue activity by using glycogen and this produces lactic acid
build up
• At the end of the activity we need to rest and take in extra oxygen, this
makes up for the oxygen deficit
• This extra oxygen is called the oxygen debt
• This allows us to remove the lactic acid and build up the atp and
phosphate supplies
