MIMAROPA
is called the Southern Tagalog
Region of the Philippines. It is
designated as Region IV-B.
The term MIMAROPA is a
combination of the names of
its constituent provinces
Mindoro, Marinduque,
Romblon, and Palawan.
MINDORO
The art of the Mangyans displays their rich,
artistic heritage. One of their art forms is
the ambahan. A variation of this is this is
the urukay, which uses eight syllables.
The Iraya-Mangyan are fond of making
baskets with intricate patterns and design of
humans, animals, trees and other objects. It
is made of dried nito grass and forest vines,
meticulously and patiently woven to create
these very unique baskets.
MARINDUQ
UE
The Moriones Festival in Marinduque is
a much awaited Lenten tradition that is
celebrated every Holy Week. “Morion”
means masks that are made from wood
or papier-mache, adorned with colorful
shells, animal hairs, tassels, and crepe
papers. People who act as Roman
soldiers during the festival wear these
masks together with vest, capes, and
wooden shields.
MARINDUQ
UE
Weaving is a skill that has been
passed on through the years by the
people of Marinduque. Because of
the abundance of buli (buri palm)
and raffia that grow in their areas,
these leaves become staple
materials in the weaving of
Marinduqueños.
ROMBLON
Romblon is known not
only for its fine marble
products but also for the
beautifully woven mats
and bags out of romblon
plants.
PALAWAN
Known as the country’s
last frontier, is rich in
cultural and natural
diversity. It is said that
the fist inhabitants of
Palawan are the
Tagbanuas.
PALAWAN
The men of Palawan are
skillfull wood carvers while
children and women are
proficient weavers. Tingkop
is a cone-shaped colander
harvest basket made of
blackened and natural
bamboo.
PALAWAN
Tagbanua carvers are well
known for their black wood
sculptures of animals with
simple etched or incised
features exposing the original
white grain of the wood.
These are used in rituals or as
toys for children.
PALAWAN
Manunggul Jar is a
secondary burial jar that
served as a container for the
exhumed remains of the
deceased. It was excavated
inside the Manunggul Cave,
Lipunan Point Palawan.
THE
VISAYAS
THE VISAYAS
Visayas is divided into three
administrative regions: Central
Visayas, Eastern Visayas, and
Western Visayas. They speak
different languages including
Cebuano (the largest group), Ilonggo
(Hiligaynon), Kinaray-a Akeanon,
Waray-waray and Leyte. They have a
rich culture that can be seen in their
folk arts, motifs and design that are
usually inspired by indigenous and
foreign influences.

One of the largest islands
of the archipelago
composed of the
provinces of Iloilo,
Antique, Aklan, Capiz,
and the Island of
Guimaras.

Weaving is a primary
form of arts and crafts
even before the Spaniards
came to the Philippines. It
was once tagged as “The
Textile Capital of the
Philippines.” Weaving
from indigenous fibers
such as jusi and piña.

Patadyong is a wrap-
around piece of cloth
worn by women as a skirt
and is usually paired as a
shade for protection.

age-old tradition in
Aklan, the leading
manufacturer of piña
cloth in the country.

Weaving baskets, trays,
and mats is also a popular
craft in Aklan. They use
pandan and bariw plants
to make their products.
The process of pagrara or
weaving is often a form of
social interaction.
PANAY ISLAND
Kapiz (capiz) shells is also
an important material in the
craft of Panay Island,
particularly Aklan and Iloilo.
Capiz shells are bleached
and dried before being
pressed or cut into different
shapes formed into products
like plates, utitlity box,
chandelier, windows and etc.
NEGROS ISLAND
In the pre-Hispanic times,
the island of Negros is
called Buglas after the
type of grass similar to
sugarcane that grows
abundantly in the island.
NEGROS ISLAND
Weaving is an integral part
of the lives of the
Negrenses using pandanand
buri leaves. Sinamay
weaving in Valencia and
Negros Oriental weaving is
a world class industry.
Sinamay is made from
abaca twine and indigenous
plants similar to banana.
FESTIVALS
IN THE
VISAYAS
ATI-ATIHAN
One of the most popular, most
colorful and fun-filled festivals in
the Philippines particularly in
Kalibo, Aklan. Held every third
Sunday of January in honor of the
arrival of the Santo Niño as a gift
from Magellan to the queen of
Cebu. All the participants cover
themselves with soot to look like
the Ati, natives of Aklan.
MASSKARA
FESTIVAL
Bacolod is considered as the most
spectacular display of colors,
beauty, and culture of the
Negrenses. Masskara comes from
two words, “mass”, meaning
crowd, and “cara” which means
face. The smiling masks have
become the city’s symbol which
earned them the tag, “City of
Smiles.”
PINTADOS-KASADYAAN
FESTIVAL
Tacloban City is a cultural-religious
celebration to honor the feast day of the
Santo Niño or the Holy Child. It is a
joint festival of the Pintados and the
Kasadyaan festivities which features the
unique culture and colorful history of
the Province of Leyte through dance
presentations such as the Pintados.
Pintado refers to the body tattoos.
ARCHITEC
TURE
MOLO CHURCH
1. Molo Church in Iloilo
depicts the fusion of Gothic and
Renaissance styles. It is built with
white coral rock and considered as
one of the most beautiful churches
in the Philippines. It is said that
this is a “Women’s Church”
because of the 16 women saints
inside. Its patron is St. Ann, the
mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
MIAG-AO
CHURCH
2. Miag-ao Church in
Iloilo, is an example of a
Baroque-Romanesque
architecture that shows through
its massive quality, thick walls,
round arches, sturdy piers, groin
vaults, large towers and
decorative arcades. It is also
acclaimed as a UNESCO World
Heritage site.
THE RUINS
3. The Ruins in Talisay,
Negros Occidental an example of
Neoclassical architecture built by a
wealthy haciendero for his
Portuguese wife in the early 1900s.
The mansion was burned during
World War II leaving behind the
concrete structure that stands to this
day. The design is elegant and the
color changes from white to gray and
orange to red as the sunset touches
the structure.
