Starting and Stopping The AS/400

The document discusses how to start and stop the AS/400 system through an initial program load (IPL), including when an IPL should be performed, the functions of an IPL, and how to initiate automatic and manual IPLs. It also covers stopping the system through a power down command or by unplugging the machine.

Chapter 8

Starting and Stopping the AS/400

1
What an IPL Does
 IPL does:
 Starts the operating system.
 Resets disk storage. This results in increasing
available disk storage.
 Recognizes new licensed-program products.
 Optionally applies delayed Program Temporary
Fixes (PTFs).
 Recognizes some changes in system values.
 Unused addresses are returned to the system.

Understanding AS/400 System Operations 2

When to IPL
 Regularly scheduled - at least monthly.
 After a power failure or any abnormal end.
 After installed delayed PTFs.
 After installing a new licensed program
product (LPP).
 A problem with system-- support’s direction.
 Your addresses used reaches 90 percent.
 Your system auxiliary storage reaches 95
percent.

Cleaning DASD – Lower Usage
 Check system libraries (start with Q) for
user libraries or files.

Understanding AS/400 System Operations 5

Cleaning DASD – Lower Usage
 Unnecessary user libraries/files - Examples:
 Obsolete libraries used for vendor demos, training,
or testing.
 Programmers’ personal libraries.
 Various system logs.
 Large audit files.
 Minimum of two Auxiliary Storage Pools
(ASPs) (ASP 1 and ASP 2).
 ASP 1 only system objects.

Control Panel Common
Components
 An LCD display information & used to
 View statuses of the system.
 Assist in problem analysis.
 Make IPL function/mode selections.
 Display stages of an IPL.
 A slot for a physical key or key stick.
 Selection dial or buttons.
 Power on/off button (RARELY used).
