1. WARM-UP
Where are we?
You and your classmates were helping Father Christmas prepare for Christmas.
You spent weeks in Father Christmas’s grotto, making and wrapping Christmas
presents for children all around the world.

Finally, on the night before Christmas, you all loaded up the sleigh with all of
the presents, ready for Father Christmas to deliver. In the rush to begin his trip
though, Father Christmas accidently left you behind!

Now you are stranded at the North Pole with no way to get home in time for
Christmas! The only way to get home is to unlock Father Christmas’s phone
and call someone to rescue you.
Where are we?
The only way to unlock Father Christmas’s phone is to find his secret code by
solving his Christmas puzzles. Once you have solved the puzzles and
uncovered the code, you can call somebody to rescue you.

Hurry up, you don’t want to miss Christmas!


Rules
You can work in pairs or small groups.
Work together to solve the clues as you find them.
Record your answers on a piece of paper.
Solve all the clues to reveal the code.
Check your answer with your teacher and find out if you can unlock Father
Christmas’s phone and escape the North Pole.

• Lots of people in China do not celebrate


Christmas. The main winter festival is
called Chinese New Year in February.

• Some people in China celebrate by


lighting their houses with paper lanterns.

• Christmas trees are called ‘trees of light’


and are decorated with paper chains,
paper flowers and paper lanterns.
Denmark
• In Denmark, people usually celebrate
Christmas at midnight on Christmas
Eve.

• Many people eat special rice pudding


dessert with an almond nut hidden
inside. The person who finds the
almond will have good luck for a whole
year.

• Instead of Santa Claus, the person who


brings presents in Denmark is known as
Julemanden.

• Julemanden has lots of elf helpers,


named Juul Nisse, who live in attics.

France
• Many homes also display
a festive wreath and a
Christmas tree.

• Many people in France celebrate by


making a traditional log shaped cake
called a ‘bûche de Noël’.

• Christmas food is different all across


France. Some favourites are goose,
turkey and oysters.

• In France, children get presents from


Père Noël. He travels with a friend,
called Père Fouettard, who tells him
how good each child has been that year.

Germany
• In Germany, people begin celebrating
on Christmas Eve.

• Families eat fruit, nuts, chocolate and


biscuits together. Then they sing
Christmas songs, light Christmas
sparklers, read a Christmas story and
then the open presents.

• The next day many families enjoy a 


feast of roast goose, breads, marzipan,
suckling pig, white sausage and
macaroni salad.

• There are lots of huge Christmas


markets in Germany which are very
beautiful.

India
• Many people in India choose to
decorate mango and banana trees at
Christmas time.

• Decorations are colourful and bright.

• In some parts of India, small clay oil-


burning lamps are used as Christmas
decorations. They are placed on the
edges of roofs and on the tops of walls.

Mexico
• Before Christmas, there are huge
markets set up in towns and cities in
Mexico which sell, foods and flowers
for the Christmas season. Some people
travel for days to get to these markets.

• The poinsettia is a red flower native to


Mexico that is used in Mexico as a
Christmas decoration.

• The main Christmas celebration in


Mexico is called Las Posadas. People
dress and tell the the Christian story of
Christmas.

Vietnam
• In Vietnam, Christmas Eve is more
important than Christmas Day.1

• Many people will celebrate Christmas


by enjoying Christmas decorations and
lights in big department stores and
hotels across the city. They may also
throw confetti and take pictures.

During Christmas, some Vietnamese
people will share a special Christmas
Eve meal called ‘reveillon’ followed by
a chocolate log for desert.
