Introduction:
Rice is a major food crop in
many regions of the world.
The worldwide production area
for rice is about 150 million
hectares, while the annual
production Is about 590 million
tonnes.
The millions of the paddy rice
has nearly a 70% yield of rice as
its major product.
Unconsumed portions of
the rice produced
include rice
husk(20%),rice
bran(8%),and rice
germ(2%).
Rice husk(RH) is the
outer covering of the rice
grain and is obtain
during the milling
process.
Rice processing:
Working principle:
• Rice husk does not have substantial commercial value and generally present an
environmental problem concerning its disposal.
• This investigation determines the suitability of producing cardboard from rice
husk, thus, reducing the amount of pulping material required from virgin wood.
• Maceration process was used to produce cardboards from their pulps.
• For comparative evaluation, along with rice husk, bagasse and waste paper were
used .
• Rice husk contained 15.2% lignin, 20.56% ash with kappa number of 99.48.
• The tensile index, edgewise crush resistance, average bursting index of cardboard
from rice husk was 11.31 N m/g, 1.11 kN/m and 0.84 kPa m2/g, respectively.
• cardboards are suitable for packaging as corrugating medium, wrapping and
insulating board.
Case study:
Materials and methods:
Raw material: Rice husks and depithed bagasse were oven-dried and stored for further use.
The oven dried samples of bagasse were cut into pieces.
Production of cardboard: Pulping by cold maceration The maceration fluid is prepared by
mixing 1 part of 30% hydrogen peroxide solution, 4 parts of distilled water, and 5 parts of
glacial acetic acid. The risk husks chips were then soaked in the maceration mixture for days
until digestion. The mixture was 83 thoroughly stirred each day. According to Ibrahim [8],
digestion is achieved when the pulp is formed, that is when the rice husk has softened. The
average room temperature was 29 C.
Determination of optimum maceration conditions, in terms of pulp yield, kappa number and
lignin content
Determination of kappa number and lignin content for raw rice husk
P-No=75 – v, K-No = P-No *f /w , %L =K-No *0.155
Where, P-No = permanganate number; v = titre value (ml); L = lignin 110 content; K-No =
kappa number; f = correction factor (50%); and w 111 = weight of raw sample mixed with
distilled water
Pulp kappa number and lignin content of rice husk pulp.
P-No =40 -v
u = Tr -To
Forming of cardboard sheets.
Brust index.
X =P/g
where P is the mean bursting strength, in kPa and g is the
148 grammage, in g m2/g.
Edge wise compressive strength.
R = 0:01Fmax
where R is the Edge crush resistance (kN/m) and F max is the
mean value of the maximum force
Important applications:
Unique physical and chemical properties of RH, like high ash content, silica content,
it can be effectively used in domestic and industrial processing.
Many of reports shown that, RH is used as fuel for different purpose, such as in
brick kilns, in furnaces, in parboiling process of rice, the raw material for the
production of sodium silicate, as an cleaning or polishing agent in metal and
machine industry.
As source of fuel.
As source of silica and silicon based materials.
As organic fertilizer.
As source of pet food fiber and as source of dietary fiber.
Used for making bricks (as building material).
Preparation of activated carbon.
Used for removal of toxic metals from waste water.
In production of bioethanol.
Example:
FUTURE SCOPE:
• The conversion of rice husk into fuel is one of the most important uses of rice husk
• The husk is a biomass fuel that must undergo thermal processing, such as combustion, pyrolysis, or
gasification
• In countries, such as India where large rice production occurs annually, industries process the husk
to produce fuel.
• Energy produced from thermal processing includes heat, electric, syngas, and biofuels .
• Using these methods, rice husk can provide power to communities in countries with high rice
production, such as China and India .
• The husk's ability to produce electricity from biomass is based on gasification for small scale power
generation.
• In the rice mills, the husk is used as fuel to generate steam for the parboiling process of
rice.
• Soil fertilization is an emerging trend for rice husk agricultural application.
• Rice husk can be used to fertilize soil due to the high lignin content .
