Psycho-Philosophical Foundations of Education: Junice L. Maraño

The document discusses models of teaching and the behavioral systems family of models. It defines models of teaching according to Dewey, Eggen, and Joyce and Weil as depictions of the teaching and learning environment that help achieve instructional goals. Characteristics of good teaching models include clear roles for teachers and students, support materials, and active student participation. The behavioral systems family applies behaviorism principles to academic content and student behavior, using approaches like direct instruction, mastery learning, and simulation.

Learning)
MODELS OF TEACHING

Eggen (1979) defines the Models are

prescriptive teaching strategies which
help realize specific instructional goals.
MODELS OF TEACHING

Dewey (1916) defines a model of teaching

as depiction of teaching and learning environment
including the behavior of teachers and students while the
lesson is presented through that model.

He added that models of teaching enable the students

to engage in robust cognitive and social task and teach
the students how to use them productively.
MODELS OF TEACHING

Joyce and Weil (2014) defines a model of

teaching as a description of a learning
environment including our behavior as teachers
when the model is used.
MODELS OF TEACHING
• Each model has built up based on a
particular learning theory.
Characteristics of a • Creation of congenial learning environment
Good Teaching in the classroom
Models • Effective interaction between the teacher
and students
• Planned use of appropriate strategies.
• Teaching process are systematically,
sequentially and logically arranged.
• Clear and specified roles for teachers and
students
Characteristics of a • Large scope for supporting materials
Good Teaching • Ensure active participation of the entire
students in a class
Models • It raises the students’ level of aspiration,
motivation, and interest in learning.
• Every model foster and strengthen the
cognitive structure of the student
7 Principles in Good
Teaching
• Encourage contact between students
and faculty.
• Develop reciprocity and cooperation
among students.
• Encourage active learning.
• Give prompt feedback.
• Emphasize time on task.
• Communicate high expectations.
• Respect diverse talents and ways of
learning.
Strategies can be classed as
direct, indirect, interactive,
experiential, or independent.
DIRECT MODEL

• Direct teaching is also known as direct instruction

• This method can be used to convey new information,

to give specific instruction or review important points

Instruction, Mastery Learning)
Behavioral Systems Family
of Models

The behavioral systems family of models

apply the principles of behaviorism to
both academic content and student
behavior.
Behavioral Systems Family
of Models
Behaviorism is a worldview that operates on a principle of
“stimulus-response.” All behavior caused by external stimuli
(operant conditioning). All behavior can be explained without
the need to consider internal mental states or consciousness[1].
