Introduction
What is Power Electronics?
It is the application of electronics
technology for controlled power flow.
The output of the supply can be
designed as needed.
The waveform, the frequency, the
current, … can be set accordingly.
More user control is the focus of the
design and can be customized as
desired.
Lowe power loss in the form of heat
Introduction to Power Electronics
Power electronics relates to the control
and flow of electrical energy
Control is done using electronic switches,
capacitors, magnetic components and
control systems
Scope of power electronics: milliWatts ⇒
gigaWatts
Power electronics is a growing field due
to the improvement in switching
technologies and the need for more and
more efficient switching circuits

Power Supplies and Converters
AC-DC Power Supply (or AC Adapter)
Change ac power into regulated dc power,
e.g., a typical AC Adapter takes 220 V ac
input and converted it to regulated 5 Vdc.
DC/DC Converters
Change DC at one voltage potential to a DC
at a different voltage potential
DC-AC Power Supply (for example, UPS,
12Vdc-220Vac adapter)
AC-AC Power Supply/Regulator (for example,
line regulator)
AC-DC Power Supply
Using Linear Regulators
Using LDO Regulator

220 V Step-down Regulator
AC Transformer
For low power (several watts or below)
applications.
Low efficiency, large size and weight (bulky
step-down line transformer)
Low cost
AC-DC Power Supplies
Modern Converters use:
Switching-Mode Technology
High efficiency
Small size and light weight
For high power (density) applications
DC-DC Power Supplies
The Need for dc/dc Converters
E.g., a single AA alkaline battery produces 1.5 V
when fully charged and its voltage drops to as low
as 0.9 V when becoming depleted.
