Describe The Appearance and Uses of Suspension

Here are the instructions I would give your neighbor's son before giving him the paracetamol suspension medicine: A. Shake the bottle of paracetamol suspension well before administering the dose to ensure the solid particles of the active ingredient are evenly distributed throughout the liquid. B. The medicine is in a suspension form where solid particles of the active ingredient are suspended in a liquid but will settle if not shaken. Shaking ensures he receives the full therapeutic dose. C. Suspensions are cloudy mixtures where solid particles do not dissolve but remain suspended in the liquid. Shaking maintains this even distribution of particles to provide the intended medical effect. By taking the time to explain the suspension form and why shaking

What are the types of mixture?

3.suspension
Suspension

 is heterogeneous mixture
 is murky or opaque
 its solid particles settle at the bottom if left undisturbed
 its particles can be seen by the naked eye
 the particles of the substances do not dissolve
 the particles are floating around freely in a solvent
 it contains two phases (liquid and solid phase)
 the particles of the substance are large
What are the uses of suspension?

Suspension can be used in preparing food

and for medical purposes and others
Suspension is a heterogeneous mixture in which
solid substances are dispersed in liquids. Particles
of the substances can be distributed throughout
the mixture by shaking but particles do not
remain distributed, the particles settle out when
left undisturbed.
The particles of the substances in suspension do
not dissolve (can be seen by the naked eye) but
remain suspended throughout the medium (the
substance in which it is dispersed.). Suspension can
be separated by mean of filtration.
Suspension can be classified based on its
dispersed phase which is solid and dispersion
medium, where the solid substance may
dispersed in either solid, liquid and gas
Suspension shows Tyndall effect where
scattering of light can be seen inside the
mixture when a beam of light is passed
through the particles of the suspension
e.g. mixing oil and water, after mixing this
two substances, eventually the oil and water
mixtures will separate with the oil rising to
the top of the mixture because of its lower
density
Generalization:

What is the appearance of a suspension?

What are the uses of suspension?
Application:

Your neighbor’s son has a fever. His mother bought

paracetamol in the pharmacy as prescribed by the doctor.
When she reads the label, it says, SUSPENSION, .She
doesn’t understand what does it mean, so she asked you to
help her. What will be your instructions to her before the
medicine will be given to her son ? Why? What trait have you
shown when you do that?
A. Make him drink water first before taking the medicine
B. Filter first the medicine, and get only the solid
substance to be taken
C Shake well the bottle of the medicine before use
