What is macro skills?

Macro skills refer to the primary, key,


main, and largest skills set relative to a
particular context. It is commonly
referred to in English language.
What are the 5 macro skills?

1. Listening
is the ability to accurately receive and interpret
messages in the communication process.

Three common modes of listening:


Competitive, Passive, Active
Modes of Listening

1. Competitive or Combative Listening


-this is the type of listening that is done when
people want to push their own type of view or
opinion rather than listen to someone else's.
Modes of Listening

2. Passive or attentive Listening


-In this type of listening, we are genuinely
interested in what the person is saying. At this
point, we are not yet at the point of responding and
being involved, but we understand the points that
the speaker is trying to make.

3. Active, reflective Listening


In this model, you actively listen and understand
what the other person is saying.
Speaking

An act of making vocal sounds.


To converse, or expressing one’s thoughts and feelings in
spoken language.
To speak often implies conveying information

Speaking Skill
A skill that give us the ability to communicate effectively
Allows the speaker to convey his message in a passionate,
thoughtful, and convincing manner
Help to assure that one won’t be misunderstood by those
who are listening
Writing

"Writing" is the process of using symbols (letters of the


alphabet, punctuation and spaces) to communicate
thoughts and ideas in a readable form.

To write clearly it is essential to understand the basic


system of a language. In English this includes knowledge
of grammar, punctuation and sentence structure.
Vocabulary is also necessary, as is correct spelling and
formatting.
Viewing

Perceiving, examining, interpreting, and construction


meaning from visual images and is crucial to improving
comprehension of print and nonprint materials. It is a
process that supports oracy and literacy, and is a part of
an integrated language arts program.
involves interpreting the images for which words stand
and connecting visual images in videos, computer
programs, and websites.
The dominance of visual media in our lives today has led
to the inclusion of viewing in the language macro-skills
Viewing

it is imperative that both speakers and listeners


critically assess audiovisual inputs and make
meaning from them (Curriculum Planning &
Development Division, 2010).
Differentiate receptive and Expressive macroskills

Receptive macroskills is the ability to understand


words and language.
Expressive macroskills is the use of words,
sentences, gestures, and writing to create a message
or convey a meaning.
Differentiate receptive and Expressive macroskills

Listening comprehension is the receptive skill in the


oral mode.
Speaking is the expressive skill in the oral mode.
Reading is the receptive skill in the written mode.
Writing is the productive skill in the written mode.

listening, speaking, reading and writing activities
