TOOLS and MATERIALS
1. Callous Remover = a tool designed to strip off calluses and corn.
2. Cuticle nail Pusher = a tool used to push back and loosen the cuticle

4. Cuticle scissor = an implement to cut stubborn cuticles

Nail and Its Structure
NAIL STRUCTURE
• 1. The Free Edge
The end of the nail plate that is shaped during Manicure & Pedicure
• 2. Nail Plate
is the visible nail that rests on the nail bed up to the free edge. This is
made up of dead cells and a minimum amount of moisture.
• 3. The Lunula
The half moon shaped point where the matrix and nail bed meet.
• 4. The Cuticle
The overlapping skin surrounding the nail. Its job is to protect the
matrix from being invaded by bacteria and physical damage.
• 5. The Nail Walls
• The skin on both sides of the nail plate.
• 6. The Nail Bed
• This is the part of the finger underneath the
nail plate.
• 7. The Matrix
• This is where the nail is made. It is the only
living part of the nail
1. Oval
this is common among people with long,
perfect nail bed.
2. Round Nail
ideal for shorter nail.
3. Stiletto/pointed
filed away at the sides to a point at the tip.
4. Squoval
similar to the above but followed by squaring off the
tip, giving the nail tip strength over the oval shape.

2. Brittle nail = vertical splitting or separation of the
nail plate layers at the distal(free edge)
of the nail plate. Over exposure to detergent
and other chemical solvent can cause.
4. Eggshell nails = the nail plate separates from
the nail-bed and curves at the free
edge. It may cause by chronic illness of the
systemic or nervus origin
5. Furrows nail = these are long ridges
that run either lengthwise or across the
nail. Caused by poor circulation of
blood.
6. Hang nails = these are marked by a condition
in which the cuticle splits around the nail.
Carelessness in removing the cuticle, dryness
can cause it.

disease caused by vegetable parasite.
BASIC NAIL
DESIGNS
A. Plain manicure = the application of nail polish to the entire nail plate.
1. Apply base coat
2. Apply two coats of polish

B. HALF MOON = involves applying of nail polish over the whole nail plate except the
lunula.

3. Apply colored polish from one side to the other side following the shape of the lunula.
4. Remove excess polish from the skin.
5. Apply top coat.
C. HALF-MOON with TIP = involves the application of colored polish over the whole nail
plate except the area of lunula and tip of the nail.

3. Apply colored nail polish from one side to the other side to form a half=moon. Leave
the part of the free edge.
4. Remove excess polish
5. Apply top coat
D. FRENCH MANICURE or TIP DESIGN = involves the application of colored polish over the
whole part of the nail except the area of the free-edge.
1. Apply base coat and leave for a few minutes to dry.
2. Apply white nail polish and leave for a few minutes to dry.
3. Apply colored nail polish from one side to other side of the nail following the shape of
the free edge.
4. Remove excess polish
5. Apply top coat
E. ELEPHANT TUSK = style that involves the application of nail polish to create S curve,
leaving a slightly larger gap along the nail wall
1. Apply white nail polish and leave for a few minutes to dry.
2. Apply colored nail polish creating a half circle design at the inner side of the nail as you
continue it to form an S
3. Fill up the other side to complete the design
4. Remove excess polish
5. Seal with a top coat.

It helps to improve appearance of your nails, but it
also helps to prevent nails from chipping or cracking

Filing in one direction will help to prevent nail tears. Start from the side of the

Do not share your nail clippers or cuticle pushers. Your tools have your own

A base coat helps to protect your nails from stains when you apply nail polish,
especially darker colours. This can help to prevent yellowing and gives you the
additional benefit of smoother application when you paint your nails.
8. Thou shalt pick polish removers wisely
Avoid polish removers with acetone in them. Acetone strips the nails of their
layers and cause them to become brittle

The most major problem with glitter is that it sticks around for ages you’ve tried
to remove the polish.

Having a balance diet that consist of sufficient intake of protein and calcium goes
