Goat or Sheep Production and Management

1. Goat and sheep production and management techniques were presented. The top regions for goat production were Ilocos, Central Visayas, Western Visayas, and Northern Mindanao. Goat and sheep are raised for meat, milk, fiber, and as breeder stock. 2. Proper management includes selecting suitable farm sites, building facilities, identification and health practices, caring for pregnant and nursing animals, and weaning and culling practices. Knowledge of anatomy and body condition scoring is also important for management. 3. Limited data is available on sheep production in the Philippines since they are an emerging commodity, but the 2010 census reported a total population of around 500,000 heads.

Introduction: GOAT
 Goat is defined as a hardy domesticated small
ruminant that has backward curving horns, cloven
hooves and a beard(male). This animal is usually
raised for meat and milk.
 Goat has two types:
1. Domesticated Goats (Capra hircus) - raised as
farm animals
2. Mountain Goats (Oreamnosamericanus) - that
thrive in steep, rocky areas in the American
Northwest.
Introduction: GOAT

 The common goat and the Dadiangas goat

(originated from General Santos City) are among
the goats raised by most Filipino farmers.
 Some farmers are also raising exotic breeds like
Anglo-Nubian, Toggernburg, Saanen, French
Alpine, and Boer.
Introduction: GOAT

 Goat production in the country is considered as

a sunrise industry. There is potential in the small
ruminant industry of the Philippines especially
that our country was declared by the World
Organization for Animal Health (OIE) as Peste
des Petits Ruminants (PPR)-free and Foot-and-
Mouth Disease (FMD)-free without vaccination
with all its zone equally recognized.
Goat End-Products
 Four (4) major products can be derived from
goats namely:
1. Chevon
2. Raw Milk - an input to a number of products like
yoghurt, ice cream, butter, cheese, sweets (e.g.
pastillas), soap, lotion, among others.
3. Mohair/Cashmere - can be converted into
sweaters, clothes, socks and scarves.
4. Breeder animals.

Introduction: SHEEP

 Sheep (Ovis aries) is another small ruminant

that is being raised for its meat, milk and wool. It
is usually stockier than goat and unlike goat, male
sheep has no beard.
Generally, it is raised for meat, pet and seldom
as source of livelihood to increase family income.
Philippine sheep weighs 29 kilograms for
average matured.

sheep namely:
1. Meat
2. Wool
3. Skin
4. Sheep By-products

GOAT
PRODUCTION
GOAT PRODUCTION

 According to Philippine Statistics Authority

(2022), the total goat production from January
to March 2022 was recorded at  thousand
metric tons, liveweight. This indicates
apercent drop from its previous year’s same
quarter level of  thousand metric
tons, liveweight.
GOAT PRODUCTION
 The top producer regions of goats in the
Philippines are the following:
1. Ilocos Region was the top producer of goat
during the quarter with  thousand metric
tons, liveweight or  percent share.
2. Central Visayas with percent;
3. Western Visayas with percent;
4. Northern Mindanao with percent; and
5. Davao Region with percent.
GOAT PRODUCTION

 Based on the data presented by the Philippine

Statistics Authority (2022), there were regions
decreases in production during the quarter.
 Central Visayas recorded the highest annual
reduction of percent, from  thousand metric
tons, liveweight in the same period of the
previous year to  thousand metric
tons, liveweight in the same period of 2022.
GOAT PRODUCTION
GOAT INVENTORY

 The country’s total goat inventory was

estimated at million heads.
 About percent of the goat population was
recorded in Central Visayas, followed by Western
Visayas with percent and Ilocos Region with
percent.
These three regions accounted for percent of
the country’s total goat inventory.
GOAT INVENTORY
GOAT PRODUCTION

 Goat production from April to June 2022 was

registered at thousand metric tons, liveweight.
It recorded an annual decrease of percent
relative to its last year’s level of thousand
metric tons, liveweight (Philippine Statistics
Authority, 2022).
GOAT PRODUCTION
1. Central Visayas with thousand metric tons,
liveweight or percent share.
2. Northern Mindanao with thousand metric
tons, liveweight;
3. Central Luzon with thousand metric tons,
liveweight;
4. Davao Region with thousand metric tons,
liveweight; and
5. Ilocos Region with thousand metric tons,
liveweight.
GOAT PRODUCTION

 There were nine (9) regions posted

contraction in their production during the
quarter (Philippine Statistics Authority, 2022).
 Caraga registered the biggest annual decline
of percent from thousand metric tons,
liveweight in the same period last year to
thousand metric tons, liveweight this quarter of
2022.
GOAT PRODUCTION
GOAT INVENTORY
 Total goat inventory as of 30 June 2022
reached million heads. This was lower by -
percent from the previous year’s count of million
heads.
 Population of goat in backyard farms and
commercial farms diminished by percent and
percent, respectively. Backyard farms
accounted for percent, while commercial farms
comprised the remaining percent.
GOAT INVENTORY
SHEEP
PRODUCTION
SHEEP PRODUCTION

 There is no available information on the

volume and value of sheep production in the
Philippines since sheep is not included in the
data systems of the Livestock and Poultry
Statistics Division (LPSD) of Philippine
Statistics Authority (PSA) is not monitoring the
data. They considered sheep as an emerging
commodity (Bureau of Animal Industry, 2022).
SHEEP PRODUCTION

 There is no much information available with

regards to sheep inventory in the Philippines.
Only in 2010 when the Philippine Statistics
Authority was able to collect data on sheep
population through a Livestock Population
Survey (LPS) (2010). According to the survey,
the total sheep population recorded was head
as of April, 2010 (Bureau of Animal Industry,
2022).
SHEEP PRODUCTION
1. Central Luzon (Region III) obtained the
highest share at ;
2. Ilocos Region (I) distantly followed with
share;
3. Davao Region (XI) with ;
4. Cagayan Valley (Region II) with ; and
5. Northern Mindanao (Region X)
The top 5 regions comprised more than half of the
sheep population (Bureau of Animal Industry,
2022).
SHEEP PRODUCTION
GOAT/SHEEP MANAGEMENT
GOAT/SHEEP MANAGEMENT

 It is vital for goat and sheep raisers to know

the management system. Having these
knowledge enable them to have high
productivity which yield to a greater income.
GOAT/SHEEP MANAGEMENT

 Site Selection of Farm

Consider the following points in site selection
for a sheep and goat farm.

1. Drainage
2. Wind direction
3. Climatic factors
GOAT/SHEEP MANAGEMENT
 Facilities
1. Fences
2. Handling pens
3. Housing (house/barn – different kinds of
buildings)
4. Dipping vats/spraying area
5. Isolation ward for sick animals
6. Manure disposal pit (away from the house),
Equipment (feeding and watering troughs,
etc.)
GOAT/SHEEP MANAGEMENT

 Body Parts and Body Condition Scoring

1. Body Parts
2. Body Condition Scoring
GOAT/SHEEP MANAGEMENT

 Identification and Marking

1. Methods of identification
a. Tattooing
b. Ear tagging
c. Ear marking (Ear notching)
GOAT/SHEEP MANAGEMENT
 Age Determination by Dentition
Indirect ways of determining approximate age of
sheep and goats are vital in systems where
production records are unavailable.
 Castration
The removal of testicles from the ram/buck.
Three methods are commonly used: the
application of elastrator ring, use of Burdizzo, and
surgical method.
GOAT/SHEEP MANAGEMENT
 Tail Docking
It protects the sheep's anus, vulva, and udder
from weather extremes.
Methods
1. Use of elastrator rings
2. Use of Burdizzo
3. Use of a knife
GOAT/SHEEP MANAGEMENT
 Flushing
A feeding practice commonly used in some
sheep and goat production systems. It is the
practice of providing a high energy/protein diet prior
to and during mating.
 Care and Management of Pregnant Ewes/Does
It is customary to divide the pregnancy period
into early, mid and late gestation
GOAT/SHEEP MANAGEMENT

 Care at Lambing/Kidding
 Care and Management of Nursing/Lactating
Ewes and Does
 Management of Newborn Animals (Lambs and
Kids)
 Weaning
GOAT/SHEEP MANAGEMENT
 Mortality
 Taking Weight Measurements
 Estimating Live Weight
 Culling as a Management Tool
