Forced Vibration Group 1

The document discusses forced vibration, which occurs when a mechanical system experiences periodic motion caused by an external driving force. It defines forced vibration and differentiates it from other types of vibration like free vibration. It explains that forced vibration can cause resonance, where the external force matches the natural frequency of the system, causing large oscillations. The document provides examples like a washing machine or tuning fork to illustrate forced vibration. It also outlines various methods that can be used to solve problems involving forced mechanical systems under periodic driving forces.

 Forced vibration is when an alternating force or
motion is applied to a mechanical system

 Forced vibration occurs when motion is sustained

or driven by an applied periodic force in either
damped or undamped systems.
Example of Forced Vibration
A washing machine
Example of Forced
Vibration
A mounted tuning fork
-It forces more air particles
vibrating, creating a louder
sound

RESONANCE
a vibration of large amplitude in a mechanical or electrical
system caused by a relatively small periodic stimulus of the
same or nearly the same period as the natural vibration period
of the system

A resonance is the sound which is produced by an object

when it vibrates at the same rate as the sound waves from
another object.
VIBRATION R E S O N A N C E
A vibration resonance occurs when equipment or a product
is exposed to an external forced vibration occurring at one
or more of its natural frequencies.
H O W TO DIFFERENTIATE FORCED
VIBRATION FROM OTHER TYPES OF
VIBRATIONS?

The vibrations of a body which take place

under the influence of an external periodic
force acting on it, are called the forced
vibrations.
