Flexi Multiradio BTS backhaul interfaces

are provided by field-replaceable Flexi
Transport sub-modules which are mounted
on top of the Flexi System Module (FSM)
core.

One System Module (FSME or FSMD), can be equipped with one of the
following transmission sub-module alternatives:
•Hybrid E1/T1/JT1 transmission sub module (FTIB)
•Ethernet transmission sub module (FTLB)

Transmission Sub-Modules (2/2)
FTIB
•It is a lower-cost Flexi Transport
sub-modules.
•It has a 160 Mbit/s throughput
performance (DL+UL, with IPSec).
•This will be sufficient for very many
eNB sites.

FTLB
•It can support 2 Gbit/s (DL+UL)
throughput including IPSec, taking
into account also encryption of the
intra-eNB link between the two Flexi
System Modules (increases BB
capacity).

Flexi Network Server 1.0 : Product Concept

•Flexi Network Server Release 1.0 and 1.0 CD2

introduces MME control plane functionality to be used as
a part of the NSN LTE offering.
•In the first phase Flexi NS is positioned as a stand alone
MME element.
•However, evolution to a flat architecture 3G SGSN is
considered as a natural evolution step in the future.
Evolution to become 2G SGSN is more difficult, since
user plane forwarding would be needed in that
environment.
•Flexi NS will be based on NSN ATCA* hardware
platform, and build on top of the NSN combi SGSN SW
architecture. The idea is that the MME functionality
developed in NS1.0 release can be later integrated as a
part of the combi SGSN.
•The product name Flexi Network Server is still
provisional.

SAE GW for LTE
PCRF
SAE-GW is split into two logical elements –
Serving GW and PDN- GW.
eNodeB SGW PGW
• S-GW provides
Services
– User plane interface towards LTE radio
network
– Mobility anchoring for eNodeB changes
– Roaming in a visited network
AAA
• P-GW provides MME
– Mobility anchoring for LTE/ Non-3GPP IP ePDG
Access interworking (non 3GPP IP Access)
– Policy enforcement, charging and Service
awareness
Implementation options:
– Lawful interception
– IP address allocation and binding • Integrated S-GW/P-GW or
• Standalone S-GW and P-GW.
• Connectivity with either GTP or PMIP
based S5.

Why NSN has chosen ATCA for LTE Core? 1/3

• Existing Functionality from Combi-SGSN and

Flexi ISN is inherited to LTE core
– Stability, Carrier Gradeness
– Kick start for functionality
• Cost savings in HW development:
– Use of COTS HW (Commercial off-the-shelf
HW)when applicable
– Design Subcontracting (NSN IPR)
• Technology updates are available without
NSN own investment
▪ NSN can choose best available technology

For public use – IPR applies

Why NSN has chosen ATCA for LTE Core? 2/3
•HW Lifecycle management
– COTS technology usage brings new HW to the
field one year earlier compared to dedicated
own HW development
▪ Longer HW lifecycle in live networks
▪ HW upgrades needed more seldom
▪ Savings in spare parts
▪ Savings in platform and product testing
▪ Savings in HW type approvals

• ATCA generations
– 1. generations in initial deployments 2002-2005
– 2. generation 2006-2007
– 3. generation 2008 –
• NSN will use latest ATCA technology

52 © Nokia Siemens Networks NSN LTE Implementation / Jose Maria Anarte / v2.0 / Document Number
Why NSN has chosen ATCA for LTE Core? 3/3
• HW components can be shared both with
MME and with SAEGW

• Superior Scalability for LTE core

– MME can scale over multiple chassis
– Inter chassis redundancy for GW
– Scalable chassis from 16 slots down to 6 slots
and 2 slots

For public use – IPR applies
