KADALUR POINT
LIGHTHOUSE
INTRODUCTION:
• Globally lighthouses are now becoming potential tourist attractions as they provide
panoramic views of scenic locations, mostly on the coastline. In addition, many
lighthouses, by themselves, attract visitors due to their status as historic structures or as
landmarks.
• Therefore many countries have carried out initiatives to promote Lighthouses as Tourism
destinations and are enhancing facilities for tourists. On similar basis, DGLL & the MoS
are proposing to develop an ambitious project for the tourism development of
lighthouses across India, which would revitalize the existing lighthouse facilities for
alternative uses.
• The project envisages benchmarking the project components & facilities to similar
lighthouse developments across the world.
• AIM:
• The prime aim to promote Lighthouse based tourism with the following
development objective:
• To enhance & develop the existing lighthouses & its surrounding areas into a
Tourism Destination, Maritime Landmark, and Heritage Precinct and also to
develop allied Maritime Infrastructure like National Maritime Museums &
National Light house Museums.
• To explore the possibilities of developing these projects under various modes
including the possibilities of Public Private Partnership (PPP) by integrating
commercially viable interventions at the feasible locations in order to make
the project viable.
In this regard, DGLL has identified 13 lighthouse sites across India for the promotion of tourism, as listed
below:
Kadalur Point Lighthouse
• Kadalur point light house, locally known by the name Thikkodi light house or
Nandhi lighthouse, is situated in Kadalur, near Koyilandy in Kozhikode district on
the coast of Arabian sea in India.
• The circular stone masonry tower has a height of 34 meters. The tower is
painted with black and white bands. The lighthouse started its operation in
1907.
• The light source is a metal halide lamp. The area near Thikkoti Lighthouse is
soaked in the natural beauty of lush green coconut & palm plantation with
Velliyamkally Rock on one side and scintillating blue sea on the other.
• It was built over a shipwreck, whose remains can still be seen here. The people
love visiting this place for its natural beauty and for migratory birds that keep
visiting this place mostly during winter.
• Thikkoti Lighhouse is definitely one of the most fascinating remain from the
ancient Kozhikode as the same was built on the remains of a shipwreck that
crashed near the rocky shore of the Payyoli beach.
