Basic Information about New Delhi
• New Delhi is the capital of India which Is located in North of India , the megacity of New Delhi is
surrounded by the Yamuna river. New Delhi is bordered by the state of Haryana on three sides
and by Uttar Pradesh to the East. The NCT (National Capital Territory) covers an areas of 1,484
square kilometers. According to the 2021 census New Delhi (NCR National Capital Region ) has
31,181,376 millions inhabitants with the satellite suburbs as Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Gurgaon and
Noida.
• According to a study on the wealth of the delhites, New Delhi is ranked as the second most
productive city of India and New Delhi is the second wealthiest Indian city after Mumbai and New
Delhi own 18 billionaires and 23,000 millionaires
• Delhi ranks fifth among the Indian states and union territories in human development index. Delhi
has the second-highest GDP per capita in India after Goa. New Delhi is a great historical city with
lots of monuments as India gate, Red fort, New Delhi own a huge transportation system with bus,
metro ,autorickshaw , expressway highway and a international airport IGI Indra Gandhi
International airport which is located 15 km from New Delhi .

History of Delhi part I

• Delhi was founded arround 3000 BC , Delhi has a long history and has been politic centre of India through multiple
Empire.Indeed Delhi was founded in Bronze age then Delhi was the site of Indraprastha or Indrapat,an Indo-Aryan city in
the Khandava Forest which served as a capital of the Kuru Kingdom, the first recorded state-level society in the Indian
subcontinent. In the medieval era, Delhi was ruled by the Tomara dynasty and Chauhan from 736 to 1193. The Delhi
Sultanate is the name given for a series of five successive dynasties, which remained as a dominant power of Indian
subcontinent with Delhi as their capital.
In the Late Medieval period Delhi was invaded by the Mughals , in 1206 the first Mughals Emperor was Qutb-ud-din Aybak,
was a former slave who rose through the ranks to become a generale . After the end of the Slave dynasty, a succession of
Turkic Central Asian and Afghan dynasties, the Khalji dynasty, the Tughluq dynasty, the Sayyid dynasty and the Lodi dynasty
held power in the late medieval period and built a sequence of forts and townships in Delhi The third and greatest Mughal
emperor, Akbar, continued to ruled from Agra, resulting in a decline in the fortunes of Delhi. In the mid-17th century, the
Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan (1628–1658) built the city that sometimes bears his name Shahjahanabad, the seventh city of
Delhi that is now commonly known as the old city or old Delhi. The most famous Mughals Emperor was the 3 and Great
Jodha Akbar but his Empire was on decline due to the financial weakness and result to the invasion of Delhi by the Sikh
Empire ,Afghan,Maratha. Later, Ahmad Shah Durrani conquered Delhi in 1761, after the Third Battle of Panipat in which the
Marathas were decisively defeated. Later, a treaty was made between the Marathas and Afghans that the Marathas would
have all the lands east of the Sutlej river. Thus, the Marathas established full control over the city. Under the leadership of
Jassa Singh Ahluwalia and Baghel Singh, Delhi was briefly conquered by the Sikh Empire in early 1783 in the Battle of Delhi .
History of Delhi part II : birth of New Delhi
• Calcutta was the capital of British India till 1911 but in 1911 at the Delhi Durbar of 1911, held at the Coronation
Park, King George V announced the shifting of the capital to Delhi. New Delhi designed by the British architect
Edwin Lutyens was inaugurated in 1931 after its construction was delayed due to World War I.
• New Delhi was designed by Edwin Lutyens who was a British architect design the entire city of New Delhi by
creating a gate between New Delhi and the old Delhi which the historical center of Delhi, Sir Edwin Lutyens
designed the famous India Gate to give a tribute to the Indian soldiers that died in the Afghans war
• Connaugt Place which is the central Business district of New Delhi was design by him , he has also designed the
roadabout in New Delhi and the Viceroy house where the president of India live nowadays,
• During the partion 500,000 Hindu and Sikh refugees move from Pakistan to New Delhi to escape the violent riot
in the North between Muslim and Hindu. The States Reorganisation Act, 1956 created the Union Territory of Delhi
from its predecessor, the Chief Commissioner's Province of Delhi The Constitution (Sixty-ninth Amendment) Act,
1991 declared the Union Territory of Delhi to be formally known as the National Capital Territory of Delhi , The Act
gave Delhi its own legislative assembly along Civil lines, though with limited powers.

double since the 1980 and due to attractive job offers in The capital of India, The average pay gap is around
₹3,89,143 per year which is around 4,550 euro

• The capital of India, New Delhi, has been experiencing one of the fastest urban expansions in the
world. Vast areas of grassland are being turned into streets, buildings, and parking lots, attracting
a lots of new inhabitants due to the new transport infrastructure and the economic expansion. By

migrants because it has one of India highest per capita incomes. According to the latest census
data, most people (and their families) move into the city for work. The Times of India reported
that India capital grew by nearly 1,000 people each day in 2016, of which 300 moved into the city.
By 2028, New Delhi is expected to surpass Tokyo as the most populous city in the world. Finally
New Delhi owns a lots of 6 ways carriage and highway which connect the suburb and all go all
over from North and Southern India.

Delhi own 6,250 bus lines , 6 metro lines , 1,750 square km of
road , 4 railways stations (Anand Vihar Terminal ,Delhi
Junction (Old Delhi), Hazrat Nizamuddin ,New Delhi the main
railway station in New Delhi station near New Delhi gate and
Paharganj. Furthermore New Delhi owns one of the busiest
airport in the world which is Indira Ghandi International
Airport (IGI), The airport, spread over an area of 5,106 acres
(2,066 ha), is situated in Palam, 15 km (9.3 mi) south-west of
the New Delhi Railway Station and 16 km (9.9 mi) from New
Delhi city centre. IGI airport is already making new
construction to create a new terminal in order to handle more
passenger because in 2019 IGI has made a huge record of
passengers frequentation which was around 100 millions
passenger. The Terminal 3 building has a capacity to handle 34
million passengers annually and was the world's 8th largest
passenger terminal upon completion. There is another airport
which is under construction and it is planned for 2030 and it
is the Jewar airport in Noida that is 78 km far from IGI airport.

• New Delhi population will reach 39 millions inhabitants in 2030 if there is no another pandemic crisis
• The main factor of urban sprawl is due to economics reasons according to a study Indian people earns
around 4,400 rupees which approximately 150 dollars but New Delhi worker class earns ₹18,797.00 which is
around 450 dollars
• The third main reasons of the rise of the population in New Delhi is cheap estate price a new flat cost about
10 lakhs to 60 lakhs (million) rupees
• The fourth reasons that New Delhi is attractive because New Delhi is a hub for of educational institutes and it
is attractive for IT worker because Gurgaon , Noida Electronic city offer a lots job opportunities for IT worker
• The last attractive point of New Delhi is the transport system are affordable for working class and the middle
class a bus ride cost 20 rupees for less than 4 km ride and 25 rupees for above 12 km route and 60 rupees for
70 km route
• The final main point is that New Delhi is considered as the street food capital , in this megacity you can eat
every nation food for less than 5 dollars , Nether less you need to chose a hygienical place to avoid the food
poisoning issues,
Which challenges does New Delhi will face due to fast urban sprawl ?
• Admittedly we have seen that New Delhi is an attractive growing megacity with more than
1 484 km² for New Delhi and old Delhi , NCR (National Capital Region) : 55 083 km² Nether
less New Delhi face a lots issues as socio economics issues some inhabitants of New Delhi
live in illegal property slum that are located in the perephical region of the capital of India
Madanpur Khadar Sangam Vihar, Paharganj Slums , Kathputli Colony, Kusumpur Pahari,
Seemapuri Slums , these slum does not have any safe water access , the electricity is often
cut due to illegal electric connection , the slums inhabitants are not safe to get fired from
the slums even in winter and finally inhabitants of the slums do not have access to
education and often work in unskilled work as garbage picker,mecanics and parcel packer.
• The Seconds biggest issues of New Delhi is the pollution , New Delhi is the 3 rd most
polluted megacity in the world after Wuhan in China , the Delhite breath hazardous air
according to WHO , according to a study a baby who is born in New Delhi breaths 40 to 50
cigarettes per days and some inhabitants who can afford go to oxygen bar.
• In winter the air can reaches hazardous level , when the hazardous level is reached the
educational institute can be closed for week and the students usually have online class.
Conclusion

• To conclude New Delhi is a megacity that is expected to become the first megacity in
the world due to the urban sprawl and the economics developpement and will
overtake Tokyo in 2030.

• Netherless New Delhi needs to improve the paywage for the worker class , to
developpe a system against air pollution and education accesibility.
• Furthermore New Delhi needs to create ecodistric and need to pay the landlord when
the land is seized or bought by an contrustion company
