Artificial Sweeteners

Artificial sweeteners are sugar substitutes that are used to replace sugar in foods and beverages. There are two types - nutritive sweeteners which provide calories and non-nutritive sweeteners which provide no calories. Examples of popular artificial sweeteners include aspartame, sucralose, saccharin, neotame, and acesulfame potassium. Artificial sweeteners are widely used in the food industry in products like soft drinks, baked goods, candy, canned foods, and dairy products to reduce the sugar content and calories compared to using real sugar.

Low-calorie sweetener that has been used for Aspartame
decades as a way to lower one’s intake of added
sugars while still providing satisfaction from
enjoying something sweet. Aspartame is about 200
times sweeter than sugar. In tabletop packets and
prepared foods and beverages, aspartame is often
blended with other sweeteners or food components
to minimize bitter flavors and enhance overall taste.
Sucralose

Sucralose is a no-calorie sweetener that can be used to lower one’s

intake of added sugars while still providing satisfaction from
enjoying the taste of something sweet. While some types of
sweeteners in this category are considered low-calorie (e.g.,
aspartame) and others are no-calorie (e.g., sucralose, monk fruit
sweeteners and stevia sweeteners), collectively they are often
referred to as sugar substitutes, high-intensity sweeteners,
nonnutritive sweeteners or low-calorie sweeteners.
Saccharin

Saccharin is one of the most

affordable low-calorie sweeteners
available. It’s popular as a zero-
calorie substitute for sugar in
cooking. It’s also used as a
sweetener in low-calorie processed
foods such as fruit juices, candies,
jams, jellies, and cookies.
Neotame is a non-caloric artificial sweetener derived
Neotame
from Aspartame with a characteristic liquorice taste. It is
used to substitute sucrose in low calorie products.
Neotame is 7,000 – 13,000 times sweeter than sucrose,
and 30 – 60 times sweeter than aspartame.
