Prince Hall

Prince Hall was an abolitionist and leader in the free black community in Boston in the late 18th century. He founded Prince Hall Freemasonry, the first black Masonic lodge, and advocated for education rights for black children. He also supported the back-to-Africa movement. Prince Hall used the ideals of the Declaration of Independence to petition for the emancipation of slaves in Massachusetts. He fought for civil rights and equality for all people in the state.

How does Prince Hall use the Declaration of
Independence?

• In 1777, Hall petitioned the Massachusetts legislature to emancipate the


state's enslaved people. ... The petition, which came only six months after
the colonies declared their independence from Britain, made Prince Hall
the first American to use the Declaration of Independence to argue not for
war but for civil rights.

• They had one son, Prince Africanus, who was
baptized in Boston on November 14, 1784. Later in
his life, on June 28, 1798, Hall married once again;
his third wife's name was Sylvia (or Zilpha) Ward.
Prince Hall had been active in denouncing slavery for
many years.
• His son, Primus, was born in 1756 to Delia, a servant
in another household. In 1762, at the age of 27, Hall
joined the Congregational Church, and soon after,
married an enslaved woman named Sarah Ritchie.
Eight years later, after Sarah's death, he married
Flora Gibbs of Gloucester.
